Nuchal fold scan & blood test, I was made to feel because i'm 35+ now that the risk is a lot higher, so dont know whether to have the test or not. So how many of you have been offered it & are having it done.
Hi durham
Just popping in from other thread as I seem to have posted a lot about nuchal screening and bloods in the past for some reason
I'm 38 and had the nuchal scan and the blood screening with this pregnancy - they use a combination of your age and the measurement of your baby's nuchal fold from the scan also the results of your blood tests (they are looking for elevated levels of certain hormones) then they come up with a risk factor for you for that particular pregnancy.
I also had just the nuchal fold scan aged 32 when pg with DD.
Your risk of having a baby with downs, chromosomal probs etc increases with age so that's why they say 35+ risk is much higher but everyone has a risk.
Not sure if family medical history comes in to it as such unless there is a specific condition in your family but if you've had previous children/pregnancies affected then that's usually noted though not used for the actual risk.
Most people suggest that if the screening comes back as high risk and you would not have any further invasive tests then you may decide not to have the screening at all.

Hi marie mcg. Congratulations, i have my scan on exactly the same day as you but think you are ahead of me by a week.
Hope everyone is feeling ok today

I chose to have the nuchal scan last time and I had a bad experience.
The baby was 1mm too small for the test to be carried out and they spent ages trying to measure and re-measure to see if they could get a measurement of 1mm more. After an eternity they sent me packing and told me to come back in a week when the baby would have grown a bit. I had to argue with the sonographer to get a picture as she said just get one next time.
I felt like they didn't do the scan properly as they were trying to do a nuchal scan and the baby wasn't quite the right measurement. I told them not to bother with the nuchal scan during this but they said cause i asked for it i had to have it. they wouldn't let me see the midwife afterwards either as i was supposed to and said to see her after the next scan.
I came out of the hospital feeling very disapointed and
I lost the baby two days later, I always wonder if there was something in the scan which they didn't see as they were too busy messing about with measuring.
If I hadn't chosen a nuchal scan they would have carried on as normal without all the excessive measuring and i would have got to see the midwife. I am not saying they could have prevented a mc but being scanned for so long couldn't have helped.
This time I am going to say I will have it but only if the baby is the right measurement otherwise don't bother and just get on with the normal scan and midwife appointment. I was only 11 weeks when i went for the 12 week scan last time so maybe i will get the midwife to send me a bit later than usual so the baby should be big enough.0 -

Sorry for your loss Pebblespop
If it helps any I have been scanned excessively in most of my pregnancies and sometimes for prolonged periods and it hasn't affected the outcome.
Unfortunately if a miscarriage is going to happen there is usually little that can be done to prevent it but I know what it's like association wise as have had 2 miscarriages in the past so I understand somewhat.
I was informed by my consultant that the most accurate time to have the nuchal fold measurement taken within the 11-13 week window is 12 weeks so I think your plan to go at 12 weeks would be ideal.
Good luck with your pregnancy0 -
That sounds like an awful experience Pebblespop, I'm sorry they put you through that
.
I must admit I was relieved when they said that they will do the dating and the nuchal scan at the same appointment, they just book me in for a double slot. It just made the nuchal feel like a "normal" part of it rather than making it something on its own IYSWIM?0 -

Hope all goes well for you this time x0 -
Afternoon everyone,
Feeling very tired and miserable today
Fed up of being in debt, and really starting to worry about how irresponsable it is bringing a baby into it. Its not a huge amount of debt in comparison so some, but it just always seems to be hanging over us. Oh well 7 months to try and do something about it I guess....

Flower08, one of my fiends has a 7 month old baby and they have a lot of debt and always seem to no matter how much they save. All the things they bought for their little one has come from supermarkets and charity shops. They have loads of outfits from the charity shop that are brand new with labels on that have come from mamas & papas or pumpkin patch. Just stuff that the original owners didn't put on their child because they didn't like them or the baby probably grew out of them before they had a chance of wearing them.
They also have a baby walker from chicco which is nearly £40 full price but they got for £5! Once they cleaned it up it looked brand new.
Don't let your debt worry you cos you will find a way. If we all waited until we could afford children, the majority of us would probably never have any.
I hope that's helped. It's what's getting me through it. Esp considering I have recently found out that I maybe about to be made redundant and I've not been here long enough to get redundancy pay! It also means bye bye to mat pay!!0
