I watched this week's OBEM and did anyone else notice the lady take off her nail varnish on her toes before having an epidural??

Are you not allowed painted toes if having an epidural? I only ask cos I was going to treat myself to a pedicure the week before bubs is due and I don't want it to stop me being allowed an epidural should I want one.

I'm not sure Dusty - I don't think you are allowed make up in theatre as I think I had to be varnish/make-up free for my c sections (which include a spinal beforehand - whether this is the case for epidurals I don't know.

    Hi Ladies,
I only usually lurk at it's early days for me but I know the answer to this one! You can't have painted nails with an epidural as they monitor the oxygen levels in your legs by looking at the colour of your nail beds - hence no varnish.

I've never heard this and I'm on no 3 now - I alternate between my left and right side - whenever it gets too painful on one side I turn to the other - does anyone know what the thinking is behind trying to sleep on your left side?

It has something to do with the amount of blood flow to the placenta , I think it is better on your left? I had been told the same thing when I was pregnant with DD, but I sleep anyway I can LOL. I did wake up on my tummy last night and oh my god the pain, I'm surprised bubs wasn't kicking me out the way LOL!!

I just wore my maternity trousers coming home from the hospital, didn't give that much thought to it tbh and your only going to be going from the hospital to the car to your house (unless you stop to visit on the way home).

Just as I was dropping off to sleep bubs had hiccups, it is so funny and DH managed to feel it to! He has not felt this baby very much as it has been quite shy but I suppose there is not much room in there now! I was really chuffed for him and he was delighted :)

Hi ema_o thank you, maybe I will try on tummy for a little longer then whilst I still can, as otherwise it's such broken sleep anyway without even adding the position element! Weirdly despite the getting up etc, I don't seem to be grumpy or *that* much more tired...

Supermaiden I have been chatting to Sweetpea too, between them and the cat when I get in I chat to myself a lot haha.. then hubby talks to bump too which is so sweet as he makes me laugh with the things he comes out with.

Thanks Hngry - it gives me an excuse to get more bits as the months go on, as comfort will be a huge part of things for all of us!

Claireloo I am the same, in Winter I feel the cold so much and spend almost every evening in a shower or bath, hopefully soon we won't have to!

Galvaniser I am probably heading towards a 10 this week from being an 8. Trying hard but not hard enough to eat all the right things :D Have gained an average amount according to online stats, so as long as that doesn't change, here's to hoping losing the weight after will go well. Plus I am trying to use my cross trainer 2-3 times a week to counteract say for example lovely White Magnums which I think Pixie got me onto after reminding me about the BOGOF deal :p...

Dusty we can all dream - no harm in that and it may help stay off bad foods! Though right now I can't think about adding to the pressure of worrying about being a mummy, let alone a yummy mummy!

Teenie hiccups are too cute, I haven't felt anything yet movement wise, sonographer had said that as it was my first baby, and placenta is on top, I would be protected for a while, so who knows I may feel hiccups before proper movement at this rate!

Re sleeping position I thought it had something to do with bladder, but seems placenta is the reason:

So I will try and alternate left to right favouring the left when I can I guess...

If your MW suggests something and you don't know why ASK!!!!!!!

Nail polish... it is fine.. the reason they don't like you wearing it for operations is they like to be able to see the tops of your nails, if your circulation gets restrictd these are the first places that go blue.. nail polish DOES NOT affect the machinery.. not even the clippy thing that measures blood flow.. and so says a theatre sister!!!!! It is too scary to tell people they might go a bit blue so they come up with silly things like it affects the monitors. I had the clippy things on my thumb with an acrylic nail coating and bright green glittery nail polish. Oh... the glitter in a lot of nail polish is usually plastic so doesn't count as 'metal' but this is the ony thing that has potential to interfere with readings.

Sleeping on left.. sleep on your back you restrict the blood supply to the legs.. plus you snore like a pig! Sleep on your right you squish the right kidney, the liver and the large veins carrying blood back to the heart which may increase swollen footsies. Sleeping on the left these large veins are unrestricted and your sliver is ok. It can squish the placenta but that depends where it is situated, i've had 3 anterior (on the front) so were squashed by everything!!

I still sleep on my front - I can't sleep in any other position although it does look a bit like a yoga position these days with my bum in the air!

I have stuffed my face today and now I feel sick although am contemplating what to have for tea....

It's just me at home tonight for tea as kids are at their dad's and OH is working late so I'm not sure either?
