I used to sniff at supermarket work (I worked at M & S but it wasn't really a supermarket where I lived) but I work for Sainsburys p/t now and it's not bad. I wouldn't say it lights my soul up with joy :rotfl: and I work on checkouts with added responsibility so at times I am like ARGHHH but it is good. From a MS POV they pay over the NMW and you get 10 - 15% off and there's a staff shop of damaged goods where you get things really cheap normally because the packaging is damaged. I buy packs of 8 meringue nests that are broken in the packet for 10p, cans for 10p and other bits and bobs for loads less (got the blister plasters I like for 75p the other day and they're £3.99 normally). Plus the people are really nice. I met my best friend, loads of other good friends and my bf there! The only downside is that you end up spending on odd bits and bobs you see on offer/feel you need that really you don't need. But if you left your purse at home that would solve the problem! Saying that you get all that at M & S but the staff shop has much more stuff and cheaper and the discount, when I was there, was 20%!

Lily I can't wait! January has been so depressing I need cheering up!

I love my local Sainsbury's and would love to work there, being able to take my son to school and pick him up every day would make life better.

I think after my recent miscarriages that I have re-assessed life and found it wanting... My career is not my priority... and I think a supermarket job is my way forward so I can focus on those who are most important.

  • Quick pop in at lunchtime for me.

Working today and off tomorrow :j. WM been on but it's wet outside.

HM curry and rice and HM naan for dinner (I love my HM naan SO MUCH!).

Had a bad day yesterday as was really tired and that made me eat too much rubbish and I 'popped' into Sainsburys and spent £20 that I hadn't planned. Back on track today with proper eating and a NSD.

Sorry to hear about your losses. :(

I know you said you'd looked online for jobs, but I think sometimes supermarkets advertise jobs in store. I think you can also ask for an application form and they can keep your details on record for when something comes up. :)

I'm really sorry to hear you had miscarriages. These kind of things really focus your mind. We have people who pick up and drop off their kids or who do one while their partners do the offer. I would be tempted to do supermarket work if I had wee ones rather than pursue a high powered career because you can never have those years back :)

Sainsburys & M + S only take applications online so that they can be processed centrally but I'm not sure about other supermarkets so maybe do what Lily said and ask in there!

    Afternoon everyone :D

Quick one from me as I have things I need to get done this afternoon.
put the vac round downstairs (Forth Bridge again!!!), dusted stairs and landing (and vac'ed) and dusted our bedroom and hung a load of washing. No forest school this morning as I had to take cat to vet to be neutered today. Shall have to pick her up this evening all being well.

It's cold out there with a brisk wind brrrrrr but seeing what's expected in Queensland I'll take this anyday. Hope everyone there is safe and prepared. Aussie I hope you're not in the vicinity x

Sorry speed read the posts, hugs for those feeling poorly and glad to see you got paid esmf - why does he only pay you when you threaten not to work?!!!!

Hugs, spoons and high fives all round. Have a good day OS or not.

...I shall spent today planning what to do with my 10p a week payrise, the payrise I was given last Thursday, yesterday we were all asked to take a pay cut, I get to keep about 10/12p of it. I shall withdraw from the union, it cost nearly £8 a month & it is a waste of money as whenever anyone asks for help it always seems to be 'out of their remit'...

Similar things here Hester, I haven't had an increment, we're not having a pay rise, we're "buying" 4 days unpaid leave by taking a 4-day pay cut which will cost me about £30 a month. I've also withdrawn from the Union, I wrote & told the boss what I thought of him awarding himself a 5.4% payrise when he was supporting 1% for us local government minions.

Thank you for your kind words. When I do my shopping tomorrow I will be sure to pick up some applications.

thank you for your kind words too!

It really does make you focus. My son is 8... and I worked all his life... because of redundancy we had most of the summer together, and it landed after my second miscarriage... so everything clicked together and it was the most amazing time.

Not long after I started this job I had my 3rd miscarriage and it happened at work... and now I keep thinking how much fun I had in the Summer.

The tests (for why i miscarry) will be done this month, and this job should finish at the end of next month... then I am going to take April off work and spend it with my son, because as you said I won't get the last 8 years back... but I don't want to miss the next 8 years!

If I am lucky to have more children I will most likely become a SAHM, but as long as my son is 8, and my only one... a part time job would be lovely!

Was just beginning to recover today from the shock of the bill for getting rid of Rats when my sister rang and wants us to go through Mums stuff she only died three weeks ago so i dont feel ready to do it yet,got her to agree to leave it a bit longer.

Just having a nice cup of coffee then going to tackle the ironing that should be me all up together then.

    Afternoon all!

Quite upset as my friend has cancelled lunch 30 mins before we were due to meet, she was due to pick up my other friend who was coming. I didn't bring any lunch with me, and we have no shops at all here to buy lunch so am trying to get hold of our other friend to see if she is coming, but have called twice and she's not picking up.

Hey ho - good for my purse strings as won't be spending any money now and my diet as i've only eaten some grapes today i suppose! just means i will be STARVING by the time i get to town for dinner tonight!

I'm sorry to hear that your friend cancelled. Can you borrow food off someone else? I know what I don;t eat I get home and end up clearing the kitchen!

    Plus not eating trigger migrains!

I hope you get hold of your other friend and still get to go out for lunch x
