Engine Blown What to do??

Hello

My Peugeot 307 seems like its just given up on me. The engine made a big clunking sound and it looks like the Cogs under the bonnet are all rubbing together.

I havent started it back up but it seems serious.

I dont have any money and dont know what to do.

Is this something i can claim on the insurance for?? What do i do??

Really need some advice

thanks

Well, you can't claim mechanical breakdowns on your normal insurance.

How old is the car, what mileage etc?

Ah right.....so i'm pretty stuck then. What do you think i should do or what normally happens? do you just try and get rid of the vehicle as broken or spares?? so confused.

    its done 67k and a 53 plate.

I would want to get the exact problem confirmed and, assuming the engine itself is severely damaged, I would investigate the cost of a replacement second hand engine or the possibility of selling it, as is, on Ebay.
  • I agree with Landy, you could at least sell it for parts. The engine went on my Punto, I think the seal broke, and I was looking at over £400 to fix it when I bought the car for £1000. I'd gotten a good 3-4 years out of it so I took the plunge and invested in a new car. If you can afford it, it might be worth just letting it go because if it DOES involve replacing the engine, it's going to be very expensive.
  • Thanks both. I am lucky i work with my partner so can share the car.

Do i need to phone my insurance company??

I need to find someone with a trailer now......oh man!!

Your insurance company won't be interested until you dispose of the car. If you do replace the engine they will be interested if it is a different spec.

    I presume you don't have AA/RAC cover.

You only need someone with a tow hitch and a tow rope if you aren't going far. Remember brakes will be a lot stiffer without the engine running.

you could always buy a replacement engine from a scrapyard. They do good spares/repairs for all vehicles and usually you can opt to pay by COD (cash on delivery) then just get it fitted by a garage. But i would get it confirmed with a garage. Check the cambelt also
Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.

Or try one of the online scrapyards like eyard or breakersyard
  • Thanks all.

I paid £350 in December to have it serviced, 2 tyres, balancing etc etc and now this happens. At least it happened outside my house.

Just checked some sites and I could pick up a replacement engine for about £350 - how much would it be to replace it by a garage though....any ideas??

The car is only worth around £1500 obviously when working :( so i'm trying to decide what's the best thing to do. Similar cars on eBay sold as non-runners are currently around £600 - £700
