lucinad - a whole box of chocs may just be responsible for your 1lb gain - although you would need to eat a whopping 700g of chocolate to put on 1lb (3500 calories=1lb) and thats a bit more than a box - more like 3/4 of a quality street tin!

    :eek::eek:

lmao!! NO...i promise it was just a small box had 12 chocolates in it, i think i would have felt really sick had i eaten nearly a whole tin of quality street :) like i said i didnt do any exercise at all either and we had chips twice last week too :(

4lb loss this week. It was a bit of a shock to see 85.2 kg/ 13st 5lbs on the scales this morning.
Nothing has really changed since last week, same sort of diet / exercise.

I have noticed that in reducing my carbs substantially I have very little craving for sweet food. I find that I can have a couple of digestives now, if I fancy which is very rare, without having to eat as much of the packet as possible.

I would be interested in your guinea pig trial Eric in as much as knowing what the dietary plan is and whether I am following similar at the moment. Are all grains cut out? I can't recall eating any, substantially, this year though I am eating porridge and rye daily.

As for the monthly challenge Fred I am male and d.i.y.

Grain is a tough one, biologically we have not evolved to eat grains but they are a key part of modern lifestyle so hard to give up, in terms of the carb/insulin side you can eat low GI grains like oats in moderation and still keep insulin under control

however i had IBS for 15 years, after cutting out all grain it has 95% gone, no more bloating, no more massive cramps especially after a bowl movement, no more passing mucus, no more acid reflux which made me feel hungry most of the time, which was a factor in my weight gain.

mind you the same can be said for dairy and i eat/drink loads of that, 400ml of goats milk every day

This is the basic idea, around 100g of carbs a day should work nicely

Something has changed recently with our diet that has made us out of sync with how our bodies evolved over the last 2-3 million years which has lead to the epidemic of obesity, diabeties, metabolic syndrome, elevated blood pressure and CHD/CVD. 100+ years ago they where uncommon to rare conditions.

Whilst there is no doubt we are eating more there is pretty strong evidence to support that is more than simple greed, the balance in what we are eating has shifted drastically to a very high carb diet, by as much as 400%.

We know that carbs create a physical addiction as the pleasure centre of he brain releases a reward hormone for eating them and that high levels of carbs affect the blood stream and can cause wildly fluctuating insulin / glucose levels which again can lead to rabid carb cravings.

Worst of all thou high levels of insulin in the blood turn the body into a very efficient fat storing machine and actively block fat burning. A double whammy for those trying to loose weight, especially if your getting carb cravings.

So the idea is pretty straight forward, try to revert our diet back to how our bodies are evolved to eat but do it in such a way that is sustainable given the availability of modern foods and without going as hardcore as say atkins.

This means eating things that come from the water, walk (or fly) above the ground and grow above the ground. ie whole unprocessed foods that are not high in starch where ever possible. Cut back or avoid grains if you can as we only started eating these very recently. Look at the foods around that match the criteria and eat the ones you enjoy.

Where you do eat carbs stick to slow sugar release low GI carbs like veg (I eat 500-800g a day) with smaller amounts of fruit as in the wild they would have been seasonal and not available in huge quantities (the body metabolises fructose very differently to other sugars) Ideally you want to be eating 25% of your cal intake from low GI carbs, about 100g a day.

The cals in cals out is not very accurate when it comes to the human body but it is worth keeping some form of a food diary as this helps you to keep focused and teaches portion control. It is critical to eat when trying to loose weight. Eat too little and the body will just go into starvation mode and you risk muscle loss which is very unhealthy and will reduce your BMR.

Protein should be eaten with every meal as it is an appetite suppressant and it helps resist muscle loss. 30-40% of food intake should come from protein.

Fats are healthy for us, its now been completely debunked that fats are bad for us. We need fat and cholesterol to survive. We spent the best part of 2.5 million years eating a very high fat diet (about 60% of our diet), low fat diets can cause depression and constipation. Eating healthy fats does reduce the risk of CHD/CAD thou so make sure you get some oily fish and nuts in your diet.

Booze, this is the tough one, there just empty calories with no nutritional benefit (maybe not red wine, but then you could just eat red grapes :p) and often very high carb. It you are on a very low carb diet you should carb up the day before going on a session as it can make you very ill.

Sticking to the above should remove carb cravings in 2-3 weeks and stop most hunger pangs. I am 58 weeks in now and find it pretty manageable with out much effort.

salt is the easiest way to get massive weight fluctuation

1 heinz big soup caused me to gain 3lbs ....

on the BL they have gained 15-20lbs in one day by drinking a a lot and eating salty food, which then flushes through 2-3 days later

Put me down for a lovely 3lbs loss this week Fred (:j) I've discovered Just Dance 2 for the Wii and although I'm really bad at it it gets me moving and seems to be doing the trick.
I'd like to be included in next months challenge! I'm female and I'm doing a DIY diet (tesco on-line but its essentially counting calories so DIY is the best fit) but feel free to stick me where ever suits.

Thought I'd pop on to say that the WW chicken casserole thingy my mum was doing us yesterday lunch time was ok, not great but ok, think she added a bit too much water as it was a bit runny but other than that quite a nice taste :) We're having another WW special tonight - a toad in the hole with WW sausages etc so looking forward to that.

I did actually weigh myself before coming to my parents last friday and know what I weighed then but I only have their scales to go on this end and if they are believed then I've lost a staggering 11lbs this week!!!! So I think there may be a teensy little discrepancy between mine and theirs but I'll let you know on saturday morning after I've weighed in!!!

Plus if anyone knows of any decent recipes (ww or not, I'm not fussed) that you can alter to fit one adult and one 6 yr old for dinners, that can basically be done with next to no cash - since separating from my husband I have very little in the way of income and he's being a bit of **** with any financial help at the minute I have around £15 - £20 a week for groceries so any help is greatly appreciated :D (pms would be good as I may miss posts on here)

On the upside today, we did a load of walking, took my daughter to the Science Museum and we were all practically running to keep up with my dad!! (He's tall and got a bit of the sargeant major route march type thing going on!!) I certainly worked up a sweat and can't wait for dinner!!!!

Hope everyone is having a great day/week, some really good losses happening - hope I can add to them :)

  • I am happily reporting a 3lb LossThis week thanks Fred :A

Must say not eaten a great amount past 24hrs and currently sat here with a numb face after an emergency trip to the dentist :(
I just hope it means I can get some sleep tonight as last night I only got 3hrs. Work was not too impressed but I was about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Eric - that is an amazing result and 20 stone on the button is ok. So when are you booking in for bodpod III ?

Betty - I liked Rob myself and wanted him to win, I think the way paddy sent him home was a little mean but it is a competition and he must have seen rob as a threat.

Puds - Your penny idea sounds good I think I will have to do some counting at work and then count at home too. I'm sure I can find some sort of process to calculate it.

Some good losses coming in this week people well done :T

Right off to see if I can catch up on some sleep
    Restarting C25K in 2014 - Week 8 - 1/3 completed
