That explains why I felt rough on Saturday. Haven't drunk much since the turn of the year and reduced carbs in my diet.
After two pints before the football I felt that I was struggling. I then knackered my diet by having fish and chips ( it being a rare treat when back in West Yorks) but was then able to continue drinking that evening.

Eric - in regard of the empty carbs. Is it likely that, although calorie laden, the beer weight drops off again quite quickly ( as long as the abstinence returns)? I added 3lbs on Saturday, sure the chippies didn't help, but I reckon they will be gone tomorrow after a return to the diet and two gym sessions

sorry i meant empty calories, ie no nutritional value

  • I've STS this week.

I was rather off since last Wednesday so I plan to get back to doing it again today. I want to keep losing and not find the weight again, I don't want to go up a bit down a bit, I want to get to a healthy weight and stay there.

    Thanks for the advice, Eric.
I don't drink very often so it's going to be a nice treat to be able to eat a few more carbs than usual when I do. It's interesting to hear that people can stay in ketosis when eating 100g of carbs a day, that seems like a lot. I am planning to gradually start upping my carb intake next week so it's nice to hear that I can probably eat a lot more than I currently do.

i get the feeling but could be wrong that atkins etc extreme carb avoidance had made some assumptions based on what science knew at the time. What we now know is that

The body switches on and off ketosis pretty quickly (fat burning mode)

That we in most cases have pretty much eaten carbs most of our existence just not in the massive quantities we do now

That higher levels of insulin in the blood not only force spare carbs to be stored as fat very quickly they also prevent fat burning.

Insulin spikes cause carb cravings for many people, a diet breaker

The 100g comes from several sources, and there are many thoughts on how far to go, i have tried most levels and 100g seams to work best long term for me

100g is pretty much what the brain uses a day so you do not get foggy thinking (all human brains are pretty equal in size)

100g a day drastically reduces the risk of the body consuming muscle

100g a day will pretty much guarantee your glycogen battery is kept empty which is after all the objective of a low carb diet, you wont however go into ketosis as deeply as atkins but i think this level is sustainable and i have dropped decent weight on it so far, and i have tbh been messing about for the last 2 months :p

Lyle McDonald has looked at the science in great detail, but is not the only person quoting the 100g a day guide

    http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/nutrition/how-many-carbohydrates-do-you-need.html

However, strictly speaking, any diet with less than 100 g/day of carbohydrate will cause ketosis to develop to some degree (more ketones will be generated as carbs are lowered). I’d note that many ketogenic dieters use Ketostix to track ketosis, small sticks that measure urinary ketone levels. These are misleading for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that while ketosis (as defined by blood concentrations of ketones) may develop, urinary ketones don’t always show up, especially as carbs are raised to nearer the 100 g/day high end.

For me weight loss is about losing weight in a controlled and sustainable fashion over the long term with no cravings and most importantly with as near as possible zero chance of muscle consumption

  • I've been a bit off the radar recently and havent even dared go near the scales. Im trying to work out what to do for the best. I dont eat that badly, or at least I dont think I do and I've been adding in exercise where I can but things just dont seem to be working. Do you guys think it would be useful for me to sign up to WW or something similar? Im not if it'll be any use, or if it'll be a wake up call and I'll realise I'm not eating as well as I think I am?

    Interested to know your thoughts!
