12 month warranty/ 24 month contract please comment if you have had a problem

Am very annoyed at the way mobile phone companies are trying to wriggle out of their responsibilities. mobile phone companies are trying to get out of repairing a faulty item giving only a 12 month warranty on a 24 month contract. I had a problem with Phones4U last week with a faulty mobile that is 15 months into a 24 month contract that they do not want to repair (the fight is ongoing) and this week with O2 on a faulty laptop charger that is 20 months old on a 24 month contract and the warranty is again only 12 months. I was also told by the O2 shop that if someone takes an iPhone on a 24 month contract the warranty only covers 12 month.
Am i wrong in thinking if a contract is for 24 months then the warranty should cover the item for the full contract period?? Would value your opinion.

You dont buy the phone on a 24 month contract .
You are given the phone as an inducement not as a 24 month rental .
The contract is for the network service not the phone .
Basic UK law applies in regards to the Sale Of Goods act .
Trading standards would advise you of your position regarding any claim under SOG which is nothing to do with a contract .

Some phones DO have 24 month warranties. A bit more research is required before signing a contract.
Just a clarification - the networks specify the tariffs and contract lengths, phone manufacturers have nothing to do with this at all, they just make phones and provide a warranty with it.0 -

Agree some companies give a 24 month warranty but in this instance in the 2nd 12 months you usually have to pay carriag. Also understand that the network specify the contract length but my point is, if you have a contract for an item for 24 months surely the supplier should make sure the said item will work for the contracted period.0 -

They do. The phone service is what is contracted. Not the handset.
I, for one, do not want increased handset costs in order for two year warranties to be offered as standard.0 -

not much point in having a service if you have nothing to use it.

But thats like saying I have a TV but as I have to pay the licence each year I should get it fixed for nothing.
Or Sky should always repair my Sky box as long as I pay the subscription.
The hardware warranty is seperate to the airtime, as has been said some maker (Sony Erricson) have a two year warranty, others such as Apple don't.
If you want extra warranty most places are happy to sell you the extra cover, question is do you (or anyone else) want to pay the extra costs, insure your buble charge £1.50 for a non iPhone or £4.99 for an iphone for insurance.0 -

Strange that majority of people i spoke to including shop staff and customer service staff agreed with my thoughts. Alll comments on here so far suggest otherwise so it must be only be me that thinks this way.0 -
If they sold the network and the phone over twenty four months and had to provide cover for an extra twelve months outside of normal warranty then one the 24 month contracts would end and two those that buy the phone outright are missing the extra twelve months in which case i would be posting exactly the opposite message to you .
Or if the 24 month contracts did not end then the price of the phone goes up .
Problem is that many just look and see xx phone 24 month contract and thats it no reading of terms and conditions .

if so many companies did not hide behind these it would not be so bad. Why can it not be put plainly to see that the item is not warrantied for the full contract period.
If you buy a phone then that is what you are buying but i still find it hard to swallow that you can charge someone for something that does no work. I have worked in retail for most of my working life and understand how most of these things work and if i am not aware what chance have the younger ones, who are the main market, supposed to work it out.
Would have no problem with the warranty period if it was all clear at the time of signing.0 -
To be honest, I think it's only you that can't see the difference between A 24 month contract and a 12 warranty.
Unless stated otherwise a warranty is (almost) always 12 months. Nokia, HTC and Sony offer 24 just send it off to them, job done. . .
OR get a sim only and buy a sim free phone, then you'll know how long the warranty is. . .0
