    This is why I always go into the post office, just to be sure I'm paying the correct amount for whatever I'm posting. God forbid the postal service was privatised, I dread to think of how much more posting a simple letter would cost, and the nightmare of trying to sort things when it goes wrong.

    Like not too long ago due to an incorrectly filled out redelivery slip that was put through my door, a £55 DVD boxset I ordered along with a book from different websites would have just carried on sitting around in the sorting office unclaimed.

    Anyway, as for the Royal Mail in general, it is now nearly February and we are STILL receiving Xmas cards, and two parcels ordered for Xmas have failed to arrive (one has been sent twice now), and another one arrived with its contents removed.

    Would it not be a good idea for her to find out how much the newsletters weigh and apply the correct postage herself?

    I'd pretty soon withdraw from dealings anyone who sent me things without the correct postage because, apart from the cost, it involves a wasted half hour collecting them.

    Some PO's in my area don't have digital scales and after being overcharged on several letters (I didn't realise at the time) where they didn't have them, I always go to the ones that do, and so far I haven't been overcharged.

    I also bought a great set of digital scales for myself for around £10 so I can check things before I go.

    Pollycat to answer your snipe "no I don't know that much about business" But In my defence all I did was to post a batch of xmas cards like most people maybe 15 or so, I did not queue up in the P.O. and have them all weighed and measured before applying the appropriate stamp. Can you imagine a long long queue at every P.O. during December each person with a great wad of envelopes waiting to be served so they can get the right postage! In case's like this maybe a rubber stamp mark on the envelope stating the wrong postage has been used please be more careful rather than give us £1,19 or we keep the card. I have Family relation who is a postman and he agree's with this.

    Glad you're impressed with the responses - pity most of them disagree with you.

    I asked if you knew anything about business because you seemed to expect Royal Mail to deliver something that you hadn't paid in full for.
    It wasn't a 'snipe' - I was astonished that you could expect RM to deliver probably hundrerds of thousands of cards that had insufficient postage on.
    Businesses are not charities - they expect to make a profit on the goods/services they provide.

    OK, so maybe RM aren't doing so well at making profit but if they adopted your c o c k-eyed idea about delivering under-paid items as a 'goodwill gesture' they'd be in an even worse situation.

    I didn't suggest you queue up to have your cards weighed & measured, all the information you need is on-line, all you need to do is buy the correct postage for the size card you are sending - or buy smaller cards:

    The fact that your family relation agrees with you has nothing to do with it.
    He doesn't make the rules or set pricing policy.

    FWIW, if you hadn't used terms such as 'bandits' or '!!!!!! Turpin', I think the replies you received may have had a different tone.
  • troll, must be. It's not as if every single post office hasn't been charging differential pricing for letters for half a decade or so.

    We sent our New Grandson his first Xmas card, nothing to posh or big 8x6 inches (ish)

    8 x 6 is roughly 204cm x 151cm and the limit on standard letter is:
    Length: 240mm max
    Width: 165mm max

    so either your 'ish' on your 8 x 6 is underestimated or there was something that made it too thick or too heavy.

    If not too thick or too heavy, your daughter has been overcharged for postge - and in that case, I would agree with your complaint.

    But I suspect that it was either too big, too heavy, too thick or a combination of all 3.

    I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

    Well, I sent a pack of the same charity cards with a first class stamp to people all over the country, some received them no prob, one person received hers 2 weeks ago (posted 1st week in December), some received notification of underpayment? This has also happened to at least 3 people I know so have no idea how this system is being put in place. Also, I got fed up receiving notification of underpayment and actually stopped going to the Post Office to collect after the 5th notification. I would also say, I have used Royal Mail for years but sadly this year I have had three parcels go missing en-route - luckily I had taken out insurance and proof of postage on the one I sent and the other two were refunded but the companies I have dealt with have mentioned that so much has gone missing this year it is causing major problems - I don't agree with privatisation at all but think something needs to be done to get standards back up again.
