This could be time for the 3 jar treatment.

    You have 3 large jars

In jar one you have loads of treats, very little ones like penny sweets or tiny plastic toys like small bouncy balls or a mix of the two.

When he does a poo on the potty or in the toilet a treat goes in jar two

When he does a poo on the floor or in his pants a treat from jar one goes in jar three.

At the end of the week he gets his treats from jar two, then you show him jar three and explain that he would have had all these treats if he had done it on the loo, then they are put straight back in jar one. You then explain the rules to him again each week.

Other than that you ignore the situation and let the treats do the talking.

It must be really difficult to try to ignore this situation but try not to make it a huge issue it could make it worse.

    Good luck.

If you talk to your HV I'm sure you'll get reassurance that this is all quite common, nursery will probably tell you the same, especially that some children will 'perform' for them but not for you and vice versa. But your HV will also be in a better position than us to check for any 'delay' or other problem.

Both my two did this - never quite worked out why but they both grew out of it by about 5 and a 1/2. When my daughter used to run around with no clothes on (think it's a girl thing) she always used the toilet for a wee but would poo anywhere but the loo! She went out and did it on the patio one day and I was horrified that the neighbours could have seen lol
The reward thing is definitely a great idea and maybe the gentle removal of treats (jar idea), however I don't think any amount of punishment or lectures will hurry things along. They sort it out when they are good and ready!

Be pleased that your little one has a bum and waist big enough to fit knickers/pants.

My DD can't be potty trained for a heck of a long time (she's 2) as her bum is too small for pants. She is still only in a size 3 nappy and we could probably go down to a 2 and it still fit comfortably....

I actually have no idea what I am going to do with her when ti comes to potty training, currently she happily sits on her potty with her clothes on and nappy on, take her nappy off and she sobs like I have tortured her. So I'm leaving it for a long time!!!

I saw these nappies and knew I'd read this post somewhere! There are an awful lot of threads with the words 'potty training' in them...

Anyway, these reusable nappies are meant to be suitable for potty training, so would probably work for your DD as they come in a variety of sizes.

Having some difficulties myself in this department!

My eldest DD was an absolute joy to potty-train. About 20 months old and she understood immediately. A couple of accidents but no problem at all.

My son was just past his 3rd birthday before he would consider trying to use the potty. It took a while for him to do his number 2s in there though. He would rather just "go" in his underpants. In fact even up to year 2 he would sometimes still soil himself, usually when we were walking home from school. Once he did it in class and I had a disgusting mess to sort out when I got home. He had put his pants and trousers in a carrier bag, but hadn't emptied the solids out! Yeeuch!!! (maybe too much information? :rotfl:)

My youngest DD has just turned 3. Over the past year or so I have asked her if she wouldn't prefer using the toilet instead of nappies. The answer is an emphatic "no". She doesn't get distressed about it and I don't push it as I know she will be out of nappies when she's good and ready. I'll be glad when I don't have the hassle and expense of them though.
  • I think the key is not to rush things. My dd has only been properly toilet trained since about october/november last year, she was 3 last June. I didnt rush her, despite numerous arguments with mil about her being slow, and such and suchs grandchild has been toilet trained since 1 day old! (not really but you get my drift!) It make me feel like a failure when people kept going on about when a child should be toilet trained. Kids (like everyone else!) are all different.
Now im debt free i want to be fat free too!

I haven't read all the posts here but what I have read has reassured me.
My little boy is 2.5yo and the issue I have is that we have been using cloth nappies fine up until now, he's started wetting through ALL hsi clothes several times a day.
I don't want to use disposables bc we've already bought the cloth kit and it would literally be chucking money in the bin.
    Anyone got any suggestions?

  • are you using boosters? some materials hold more liquid than others - bamboo perhaps? i can't remember because i'm a bad person - i started with cloth and when he grew out of them at just 17 weeks old i started using disposables :o

  • Hello all

Have started toilet training my dd 2 1/2 as of monday, its been great, no accidents and she's clearly ready. We popped out thursday evening for 1 1/2hrs with no accidents, but i'm wondering what we can take when going out for a few hours later. Obvoiusly i'll take spare knickers, trousers and socks, i've bougt something called a Piddle Pad which sits under her bottom in the car seat and buggy which will absorb wee but wondered what else if anything. I'm not wanting to use pull up nappy/pants as its too close to a nappy and i worry it will back track our good work. is there anything else? I'm going to b uy a spare comfy loo seat to keep in a carrier bag under the buggy incase we need to use a shop loo, so its the same as we have at home.

Am I worrying too much? Its all new to me (and dd!!)

That all sounds fine. We had a portable potty when toilet traininhg DS and never ever used it, so if your DD is Ok about using toilets I wouldn't bother with this. You'll obviously still need wet wipes in your bag for a while yet in case of accidents but all the rest sounds fine.

Sounds like she's doing really well though - clever girl!
