Toddler Toilet Training help! (merged)

i agree with other posters, do not feel pressurised by others to do it so soon (why are so many kiddie things like a competition
) i cant remember exactly when i trained my two but i do remember i delibrately waited until summer (thinking a lot of washing and drying clothes outside etc) and i think the week i decided to do it we stayed in all week too! i also made a massive fuss when they managed to get some pee in the potty and i think with my second i did have some kind of reward system going. good luck and dont worry.
totally a tog!:D0 -
I'm in the same position, my ds is 3 in may and isn't interested in potty training at all.
We've tried letting him run around nappyless, he won't sit on the potty or toilet and is more than happy to have nappies. We've come to the conclusion that he isn't ready yet and will be trying again at easter too when i have time off from uni.
There are kids at ds's nursery who potty trained at 18/19 months, as a rule these were kids who had older brothers and sisters to learn from. Good luck potty training buddy x0 -
Well my little man isn't yet and he's started nursery (who won't change him - a good job he's pretty regular..)and I don't give a monkeys. Yeah, it does sometimes seem like a competition. OK he's can't go to the loo yet but there's plenty of other things he can do that his peers can't. Put it this way, I'll worry about it if he's still in nappies at 18!
And anyway - all these people who did it at 18 months - were they really or did they spend the next 12 months clearing up 'accidents'? I'll wait until he is, and we are (i.e. holidays and warm weather) ready, thank you very much.
People potty trained very much earlier in the past because they wanted shot of the cloth nappies, I reckon.0 -
Not that there's anything wrong with cloth nappies, I hasten to add! (I used 'em) but the washing factor.0

My youngest son was a dream to potty train. On his second birthday he told me he was a big boy and wasn't wearing a nappy any more. We had very few accidents and he did brilliantly. He was dry completely for 6 months but then started wetting on a night and still does at 5. He does suffer with enuresis though (medical bed wetting). My littlest who was 3 yesterday worried me because he showed no interest at all. About two weeks ago I decided to try again and he has only had about half a dozen accidents and that includes nighttime. They all do it when they are ready and if you push it too soon you upset them and yourself. It's not worth the hassle.
Good luck when you do start with it.

Spot on! My little one was 2 in November and since Christmas I've taken a completely irrational loathing to dealing with his washable nappies, which I previously had no problem with. My choice was either whack him in disposables (which to us felt like it would undermine the previous two years of being eco friendly,) or go for it with potty training. We are two weeks in, and Niagra Falls is finally slowing down to a dull roar, but I do worry that he is not as ready as I am. Ah well, at least I've gots lots of microfibre cloths for mopping up, as they used to be the boosters for his nappies (very MSE, 3 for a quid in Home Bargains!)
As other posters have said, try to resist the pressure, you know your own child, and you'll make the right decision about when to go for it.0 -
Be pleased that your little one has a bum and waist big enough to fit knickers/pants.
My DD can't be potty trained for a heck of a long time (she's 2) as her bum is too small for pants. She is still only in a size 3 nappy and we could probably go down to a 2 and it still fit comfortably....
I actually have no idea what I am going to do with her when ti comes to potty training, currently she happily sits on her potty with her clothes on and nappy on, take her nappy off and she sobs like I have tortured her. So I'm leaving it for a long time!!!I saw two shooting stars last nightI wished on them but they were only satellitesIs it wrong to wish on space hardwareI wish, I wish, I wish you'd care0 -
My OH sister likes to brag about how her friends kid was on the potty at 10months. I find that HIGHLY un likely, a 10month old can't move fast and Im sure they dont understand what holding it in means.
My DD is 21months, and I haven't potty trained her yet, she hasn't showed any signs (although today her nappy was full and she started pointing at it going EWWW YUK and then got her mat out for me) I have a potty for her but she wears it as a hat, so I reckon I'll be bypassing the potty and going straight for toilet, she might decide to tip contents on her noggin!
I wouldn't worry about the age though, my sister is 4years old, and my mum tried on and off with her when she turned 3, and then one weekend she just did it properly and she was off nappys! She just turned 4 and dosen't need bedtime nappys and I honestly wouldn't worry about it, at the end of the day, you don't know anyone in nappys at age 10Win £2008 in 2008 no #49 £601.91/£2008

My MIL gave me the best piece of advice ever - they will come to it in their own time none of them start school in nappies!
After that it all seemed ok and DS1 potty trained in no time because he was ready for it! Wait until the weather warms up and they can run around the garden in the all together - its so much easier to clean up then too!!
Please dont feel pressured because they really DO all come to it in their own good time , you will always get the mother who has her child potty trained before everyone else, but really in the grand scheme of things having a happy healthy child is far more important.Free/impartial debt advice: Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) | National Debtline | Find your local CAB0 -
my daughter had just turned three when she decided to use the potty. The potty had been in the house for about 6 months previously, it was very gradual and LO decided when she wanted to 'be a big girl'. We didn't force her, just let her sit on it sometimes or watch us on the toilet :0). She just picked it up. I remember feeling like a terrible mum when other kiddies were using the potty at 2!
I think don't stress, perhaps have the potty avaliable. One day, probably soon, she'll start wanting to use the toilet or want to take the nappy off?0
