Some years ago a ghastly neighbour of mine tried to accuse me of cracking her son's bumper as I backed out of the drive. I knew I hadnt, and denied it. She came round like a banshee, and I stood my ground. Several days later the police came round, had a brief discussion where I continued to deny it, and they asked me to come down to make a statement.

Of course my statement still denied it, and the police seemed happy.

I never heard another word from anyone about it.

Did you actually hit the son's car? The OP admits to a collision.

There is nothing to stop the woman with the scratched car making a claim direct to the OP's insurers, whoever they were at the time.

The reason every accident must be reported, regardless of claim likelihood, is any involvement in an accident impacts on the risk you pose to your insurer.

Practically, as others have said, incidents such as this are not usually reported.

I would have done as the OP has done, up to now.

But with the risk of an incoming claim, I would contact the insurer of the time and warn them of that fact.

My stance to the other driver would be a firm 'not interested, go away, stop bothering me'.

It may be a decision of convenience, but I would not contact my new insurer at this stage.

If the old insurers paid a claim, I would contact the new insurer.

Bear in mind all paid claims go on a database shared by all the insurance companies.
  • Thank you for everyone that has given advice and not just argued among themselves. :)

I have now received an email (you know from the people who lost my details?) bear in mind yesterday I only gave them name car reg address and number saying they have a quote for £330 and want the money.

So I called my old insurers and gave them all the details and details of what happened they were really helpful and didn't have an issue with me just getting in touch they took all the details and said they now wait to get contacted by their insurers and will investigate and then a decision will be made but that they will look into it before just paying out.

If I am found to be at fault I will inform my insurers and if they have to cancel/change my policy or premiums that is something I will have to deal with however I never intentionally deceived them and as I explained to my old insurers I really did think there was nothing else I needed to do once we accepted nothing was damaged. To which he just replied don't worry about we will get it all sorted.

...If I am found to be at fault I will inform my insurers...

Strictly, even if your old insurers do not pay out, you should inform the new insurers a claim has been made against you.

It looks as if the other party is intent on pursuing this, so I would inform the new insurers.

I know it's like inviting them to charge you more, but only a few weeks ago you presumably told them you had no claims or accidents in the last x number of years.

No one's going to send you to prison for that, but it does give the new insurance company a good starting point to wriggle out of any claim you make in the future.
  • Thanks Neveragain.

As soon as I receive confirmation they are persuing a claim I will contact my new insurers.

I am hoping now I have gone back to this woman and said contact my insurers I do not want any contact with you she will give it up as a bad job but as soon as I know I will let them know.

What did you say to the insurance about how it happened?

Don't think there's a lot more you can do.

Unfortunately, insurance companies seem easily persuaded to pay this sort of claim.

The policyholder - you - is left with a crushing sense of injustice and increased premiums/decreased no claims.

Very, very, frustrating, but I think you need to be prepared for that as a 'worst case' scenario.

On t'other hand, the other woman may lose interest or may be more wary of telling lies in writing to your insurers than she is of shouting at you in a car park.

Lets hope the OP is on protected full no claims.
