An interesting article on ATS's website, on budget v premiums.
Although they don't test ATS's own budgets,
Arrowspeed from Kwik Fit come out quite well.

So you wouldn't buy a tyre at all, you'd use whatever you got free?

I get Michelin tyres for free... of course I'd not go and buy anything else!!
Why would I go buy something else when I'm supplied with Michelin Primacys and really like them?

If I got given something made by a company which I didn't consider to be good enough for my car, then yes, I would most definitely go out and buy something decent.;)

I just bought a Falken Sincera tyre - out of necessity and convenience and time restraints meant I could not wait 24 hours for him to order me a different brand, so I got this one out of his stock

175/70/13 £38 all in, which I thought was a bit pricey compared to last year.

Anyways Falken made in Thailand and the new tread depth was only 6.7mm
    The Avon was 9mm!

Really not impressed with that 6.7mm, That has made me think that before I buy off the shelf again, I will measure the new tread depth.

    mileage 84500

Depends what you mean by manufacturing.

We used to build an item, by assembling the components manufactured in the uk, and then selling the finished product for say £100. So £100 of manufacturing in the uk, and profits to the uk.

Now we buy all the items from abroad, import them, re-badge, and maybe bolt a few large items together, them re-sell it as a british manufactured item for the same £100. However we've probably bought £75 at least from abroad.
So £100 of manufacturiing in the uk, but now £75 worth of imports.
Same manufacturing, but imports increase, and eventually "manufacturing" becomes re-selling. No jobs, and minimal profits.

You keep the country's total up by having bigger and bigger jobs, and all the little ones go.

I'd be interested to hear your evidence to support making statements like these.

I've worked in manufacturing for 30 years and my experience does not support what you're saying

Just bought some new tyres same size 1756514 T

The Avons now were £39 fitted and I decided to try Goodyear this time to see how much tread etc.

    Goodyear Duragrip £41.95 fitted
    Made in Poland
    7mm new tread

Goodyear Efficient grip compact £41.95 fitted
    Made in China
    7mm new tread

I won't buy goodyear again. next time maybe Michlin Energy, maybe it will be made in UK.

14500 miles have passed but I wore the falken (on the front) down to below tread limit, so I guess got to take at least 2,500 off that figure, maybe the falken lasted 12000? The falken did not perform very well, it was bald in no time which isn't surprising given that it started out at 6.7mm
The Avon was around for 20,000miles 63500 - 84500 but I can't vouch that it was always on the car so that's unreliable data.

Mileage today 99,000 I will try to better with the mileage recording for the goodyears but lifes little events always get in the way.
  • Im looking for tyres, size 197/70 R14 91 and im wondering if anyone can recommend uniroyal rain expert or barum?
Dont want to be paying an extortionate amount but dont mind paying a wee bit extra for a better tyre.
    Thanks in advance:)
  • Uniroyal rain expert are a reasonable tyre, although a bit soft in my opinion, but at least it is a branded tyre most people have heard of.

Barum are cheap budget tyres, a favourite amongst the tyre depots.

    I'd go with Uniroyals
  • Thanks,i was leaning towards the uniroyals because i had heard of them and there is not a great price difference between them and the barums.

I'd happily recommend Uniroyal RainExpert - have had 2 sets on my car (185/65 R14). As mentioned above, a slightly soft tyre so don't wear quite as well as some others (about 18000 miles on the front of the Rover 25 compared with about 20000 for the Kumhos I have on at the minute), but they are fantastic in the wet - inspire total confidence. Also very good in cold wintry conditions, probably because the softer compound stays softer in the cold. I got up some snowy hills you wouldn't think a 2WD car should be able to.

If you get the uniroyals and you have an accurate tread depth measure, accurate to a tenth of a mm, I'd like to know the tyre size, the country of origin and new tread depth.
