Depends what you mean by manufacturing.

We used to build an item, by assembling the components manufactured in the uk, and then selling the finished product for say £100. So £100 of manufacturing in the uk, and profits to the uk.

Now we buy all the items from abroad, import them, re-badge, and maybe bolt a few large items together, them re-sell it as a british manufactured item for the same £100. However we've probably bought £75 at least from abroad.
So £100 of manufacturiing in the uk, but now £75 worth of imports.
Same manufacturing, but imports increase, and eventually "manufacturing" becomes re-selling. No jobs, and minimal profits.

You keep the country's total up by having bigger and bigger jobs, and all the little ones go.

Japan has built its entire economy on turning imported materials into something more valuable. Are they not a manufacturing giant then?

Lack of R&D, and associated reverence to engineers and scientists, is the problem this country suffers from. We need to work smarter not harder to compete -- problem is we seem to have lost the "smarter" part.

You can't compete with China and India on their terms -- and we don't run a socialist economy so we can't have Soviet-style car plants where 99% of everything is made on-site either.

Yes, Japan import raw materials, and export finshed goods.
They built most of their economy on reverse engineering initially.
We import nearly finshed goods and put them in a box.

My Cooper tyres have E11 on, so does that mean UK then? I had a look at my Avon bike tyre and it actually has made in England on it, couldn't see anything similar on the car tyre
It means it was type approved in the UK. Earlier posts in the thread show tyres of various countries without corresponding E no/s so it shows we can't rely on the E no/s to determine country of manufacture.

It may say on the other side of the tyre, a bit awkward if it's on your car. Thanks anyway.

So you'd buy a quality assured, E marked tyre that's passed all the right tests for use in europe?
Or do you mean you mean the quality standards and the tests are meaningless, and that quality is dictated by price or name?

My car tyres are supplied by work... they are always Michelins ;)

I work in quality, and I'd not buy something as important as a tyre from someone who made it as cheap and fast as could be.

I'd rather pay a bit more for something decent that's on a palm sized area between me and the road...

So you wouldn't buy a tyre at all, you'd use whatever you got free?

I'm all for buying British but when it comes down to safety and performance I'll go for the best product that can do the job over where it was manufactured.

Sadily i agree! Buy best for you - not what best for the UK.

I think Pirelli had a range under Ceat brand a while ago, they could have been made in Spain, possibly before the other Ceat started exporting over here.

    Ceat Tornado made in Turkey
    Infinity made in China

So Ceat may not be Indian entirely be the look of it. Or some other tie up exists.

Do they make the Cooper brand in the UK, or is that China?
Are any "Avon" branded tyres produced outside the UK?
