  • Sylbake,

Apart from having sky i also have freeview in my home.By the sounds of it this would be perfect for your Mother if she watches Itv2 as its part of the freeview service.Apart from that there is Sky news and a few other decentish channels for free.Of course the best thing is its free once you have initially paid for the box (Which have come down in price).I`m no expert but they do boxes now i understand which is freeview with a slot for a card for people to purchse a top up and E4 is one of the top up channels.

Unlike Sky the top up service is not subscription based and it works something along the lines of pay for a month at a time or something similar.

    Hope this helps a little.

Go on...treat her to a freeview box, seeing her smile and save money has got to be worth it !
  • Sylblake,

If you are going for the freeview option then as far as i`m aware you won`t need both boxes. The channels you get free from sky will all be on the freeview box along with a lot more you don`t get free from sky so she would only need the one box.

Take a look at this link

    http://www.radioandtelly.co.uk/freeviewreceivers.html

That will give you some idea of prices, they start at about £40 for a basic one and more for the ones that allow the top up function. Not bad for a one of payment and a lot more channels than normal Tv !

    I`m sounding like a salesman now !

If i go ahead with my Sky cancellation then i`m going replace my Sky box with freeview.

Had letter from Sky today crediting my account by £41 as a goodwill gesture. :D Unfortunately my Sky has seemed to have stopped working altogether - Strange that? ???Now they want £65 to come out. I've tried resetting etc and had 1 long conversation with Sky. Will wait till husband comes home but the radio does seem a good option (again).

well i posted here on sunday think it was that my package had been reduced 6 quid until i got back to them with the answer of whether or not i was defo cancelling.received letter this morning 2 say that they're doing it 4 3 months.decided i'd try ntl out and c wot they could do for me.ended up in cancellations and i said that i bet sky would reduce the price for me.was told no.when the guy asked me wot i would be doing for a fone if i cancelled i said 'well actually......' think he knew wot i was after.he's reduced my BB 2 half price 4 3 months which is good cos i'm not here a lot of the time and i'm still paying out for all my sky and ntl.i'm a happy bunny.didn't think i'd get them 2 budge but i suppose it depends on how amenable the person is.
  • The 6 months for half price to get you back offer code is VALUE. So you can try cancelling and then coming back using this code and see if it works.

  • I rang up to cancel today. They asked hadn't I considered going on a reduced package but didn't offer anything other than that. So I'm now on 30-day notice & have made a diary entry to ring on day 28 or 29 to say I've reconsidered, if they don't offer me anything in the meantime. I am presently on Sky+ with full package [Movies as well as Sports] -- they said I had to increase my package [oooh! Matron!] to the full whack when I upgraded to Sky+, previously I hadn't had Movies - well, I was on the G1 [or whatever it's called] package at the time. I will see if I can chop off the Movies or go back to G1 when I "change my mind" (If my wife doesn't object too much... Well, we don't watch Movies v.often & didn't have it before!)
Expect the worst & hope for the best...

Well that was a flat-out lie by them, and worth unsubscribing in protest just for that. You can have Sky+ with no pay-TV subscription (just BBC, ITV, C4 etc), or with the Value pack, the Family pack or any combination of premium channels. The only catch is that they make you pay a £10 fee every month for the priviledge of using your own Sky+ box to record, if you don't have two or more premium channels. (BTW it's a bit like paying Hotpoint a monthly fee to allow your washing machine to wash clothes, or Toshiba a monthly fee to allow your VCR to work. There is no service involved other than unlocking functionality already built in to the box). You definitely do NOT have to be on the top package to use Sky+ features.

I have Sky+ and get Sky Sport1,3 and Sky Movies 2,4,6,8 for £30 per month. This is the cheapest package to get the free Sky+ subscription. The best thing about this package is that Sky Sports 1 and 2 can be interchanaged whenever you want as they are both premium channels and on the same level. The 30 day clause does not apply. It beats having to pay for 2 channels when you can only watch one.

    **Update**

I rang about cancelling and was asked why. I was told I was being made redundant and the purse strings were being tightened. He advised me to e-mail the Customer Care department as apparently "they have more lee-way" and may give options on how to keep Sky but cheaper. I was a bit taken aback by this but, heigh-ho.
