Yes, check the prices with one, then the other, then both.
It can vary but is normally a lot cheaper than just yourself.

You sure can. I know how you feel mate I pased my test when i was 19 (18 months ago) and found the hard way how an Insurance company will molest your bank account like no other. I second the suggestion of finding an insurance broker. The garage I bought my car from (2001 Renault Clio Dynamique) gave me the number for his personal broker when I paid the deposit.

Online the quote were coming in at 2k (on a car that was worth 2.5k). Adding my old man as a 2nd named driver only took bout £50 if that and hes got over 10 years no claims..However the broker got it down to 1700 fully comp (didn't want to chance it).

Also I suggest when ringing these companies you play them off against each other, at the end of the day they want your money and a little white lie along the lines of 'o is that the best you can do so n so are offering this much' isn't going to hurt anyone.

It is unfair how us young drivers are penalised, especially after witnessing a 20k+ focus st being wrote off last night after the driver lost control racing it along a duel carrigeway.

Anyways good lukc with your test, you got a good attitude on you and that will help you in the future!
  • I know I am opening a can of worms here. but do people not complain about female drivers? Their insurance should be more !!!

I had a moped for two years before I got a car/passed my test. All cars were only insured Third Party (not even fire and theft most years), until I was about 30 - always drove old cars though (had to have the floor welded on most years to pass the MoT).

Statistically they have less expensive accidents than male drivers.

The problem with older cars is they're easier to break into so insurance is often higher. Also, older cars don't have the same safety features which I think is a vital factor considering younger drivers are at higher risk of having an accident.

I really don't think you're going to find anything much under £3K having been through all this recently with my own son. Even adding me as named driver it only reduced by £200 :(

I tried a 1970 VW beetle with a 0.8L engine, and it was still nearly 3k. haha. But ill try a mini as the site wasnt working when i was doing it. But ill give it another go!

I have looked for such things because i really dont care what type of car i get as long as its cheap, a corsa would be the ideal but its not going to be possible, so anything will do, ive tried micra, and ive also tried a KA, and both are nearly 3k still.

Thank you for putting me in the same category as many of the young people you may know or have experience with, however as this "stupid little boy" is paying for the majority of everything needed, i think id be carefull enough not to forget how much of a serious and important task driving is, because if i mess up ive got quite a large sum of money missing from my account that i wont be getting back! Not everyone whos 17 is some know it all teenager who thinks its cool to put a loud exhaust on their car and turn the radio up to max.

I want a car so i can get a better job and continue to expand my knowledge and skills for the future, so this cars far from some sort of "look what ive got and you dont" tool to be used against my friends.

Just saying. Also, theres a lot of experienced older drivers who may not have had a crash thereselves but if they looked in there rear view mirror would probs notice they caused a few.
I cannot help you in you search for a fairly priced insurance quote - I am going through a similar experience with my daughter - but I am very impressed with your demeanour and attitude in relation to all that has been posted here. You are obviously not a 'stupid little boy' but more a decent and likeable young man who is being penalised by insurance companies (for whatever reason). Good luck in your quest.

Thanks! I shall go down to our local insurance place in town when im off this week. Hopefully he will be able to help me out! I agree about the young drivers thing, its totally unfair to tar everyone with the same brush... but i guess its just the way it goes. :(

Thats true but its a catch 22, you buy an old car and its not got the NCAP ratings or an alarm etc so you get higher insurance, you buy a new car, its worth more and its got a bigger engine soy ou get higher insurance :( You just cant win!
