If either of your parents have insurance, could they consider putting you on their insurance for 12 months? Be careful though that if you're the main driver of the car you declare that or you'll get found out and your insurance is invalid.

They both do but my mums worried if i have a crash in her car she will loose her no claims and as shes got the most you can get shes not wanting to risk it, and also, i wouldnt be able to build my own no claims :(
    Have you tried pass plus??
My fiancee passsed his test, bought a 1 litre 97 micra..and was getting silly quotes liek you are.
He went into Swinton they said 1800 which was better then the 3k, they then said we will give you it for 1300 if you do your pass plus in the next 60 days.

Also try going into some insurance companies or phoning them :)
I havnt done pass plus because ive not passed as of yet, but i will most likley be doing it as it could be the only way.
Suggest you go and talk to a good local broker - suggest not Swintons as apparently there have been a lot of bad reviews about them.

Brokers often have access to parts of the market (Lloyds for instance) that the general public do not. They will likely know of an insurer that specialises in insurance for young drivers. You could also try NFU - if you live in a rural area there may be a local office - as they often offer decent rates for young drivers.

Unfortunately though, the hard facts are that 17 year old males are the most expensive group to insure because of the claims experience of the group in general. Insurers are not likely to pay out much for own damage claims, because often this group will have cheap cars - the danger is the cost of third party injury. A sad fact is that if a third party is seriously injured, the cost of the claim will be higher than if they were killed, because of the continuing costs of lifetime care.

Although you are desperate for a car, you may be better off financially to wait until you have had your licence for a year when there will be an automatic drop in the age loading. It is a sad fact that the actions of the minority penalise the rest of us.

Okay, i will pop down to town next time i can and see what they have to say.

    Thanks all.

Would it be possible to buy a classic car ...like an old mini.

One of the kids at work did this to get cheap insurance.

Sorry to say it but you need a really miserable car that is only fit for grannys to look at, because they don't make claims nearly as much.

Old micra? Old Ka? Old suzuki swift (now they are butt ugly, really ugly, so should be cheap!). Old metro?

Any car you think of a young male in, scrap that idea. Corsas even when I started driving 6 years ago were high, as they have mild street cred.

I don't envy you needing insurance now. It is miserable. My renewal offering is twice what I paid last year despite no accidents or issues. Sadly it's also positively cheap compared to others :rotfl:

    That only protects the discount.
It does not protect from premium increases as the result of any claim.

Better than a double whammy, but it's wrong to think she would be fully protected.

I wish they would change it so you can take lessons at 17, but cant do theory and practical tests untill your atleast 18.

I hate stupid little boys/girls who turn 17 go out and try do 25-30 lessons and say their ready to be driving alone.

I tried a 1970 VW beetle with a 0.8L engine, and it was still nearly 3k. haha. But ill try a mini as the site wasnt working when i was doing it. But ill give it another go!

I have looked for such things because i really dont care what type of car i get as long as its cheap, a corsa would be the ideal but its not going to be possible, so anything will do, ive tried micra, and ive also tried a KA, and both are nearly 3k still.

Thank you for putting me in the same category as many of the young people you may know or have experience with, however as this "stupid little boy" is paying for the majority of everything needed, i think id be carefull enough not to forget how much of a serious and important task driving is, because if i mess up ive got quite a large sum of money missing from my account that i wont be getting back! Not everyone whos 17 is some know it all teenager who thinks its cool to put a loud exhaust on their car and turn the radio up to max.

I want a car so i can get a better job and continue to expand my knowledge and skills for the future, so this cars far from some sort of "look what ive got and you dont" tool to be used against my friends.

Just saying. Also, theres a lot of experienced older drivers who may not have had a crash thereselves but if they looked in there rear view mirror would probs notice they caused a few.

    They didn't make a beetle with a 0.8L engine.

But if you go for a classic car, telephone (as you won't get a quote online) Footman James.
Classic Beetle 1100 or 1300, mini 998 is a good choice, but the 1275 is affordable for you at 17 tpf&t.
(They'll do a classic car policy for you, not a mainstream policy)
