Your right being male will costs more, both my daughter and her boyfriend want to drive the car they get, they haven't got one yet but due to see one soon.

You can get insurance that will cover you certain times of the day with a smart box to monitor your usage have you thought of going down that route?

Sadly because of the actions of the few young drivers those who may drive more responsible are penalised you just have to bare with it and drive carefully and get experience and nocd
I think its wise to get a car thats cheap to insure and also costs less to run given high costs of insurance and now fuel

Have you considered a Ford KA? they are a 1.3 but they are a low insurance group - my OH got one when he first passed and I know it was pretty cheap to insure. I ran the quote for his old KA (2001 model) for me as if I was 17 and it comes out at £1800 - bear in mind if you had someone else listed on the policy such as your parents this might go down further.

Also bear in mind that insurance companies work on risk factors - if your car is kept on the road it will automatically be more than kept in a garage.
Also in regards to your friends who had cheaper insurance it works hugely on postcode - so even those in the same area can have hugely varying quotes, my OH's is £100 more living where we live now compared to where we used to which was only a few mile down the road.....

EDIT: Gahh just realised your male - that £1800 quote just went up to £3100 :(

Ditch the idea of a 2000-2002 car. Get an old (but safe/reliable) car and run it for a year TPFT. That will get you a years no claim which is invaluable at your age. Then upgrade to a better car as you get older/more no claims/insurance prices come down.

I started of with a 998cc Metro at 18 (ok 12 years ago now) and I was paying a damn site less than my mates with flashier motors. And because of that I could actually afford to use my car, rather than it sitting on the drive looking nice with no petrol in it or tax etc.

I thought a 10 year old car was quite old :( haha. But i take your point, this may be a good route for me, as i plan on using it mainly for work traveling, and i could manage to go with my friends places in their cars untill i could afford to get a better one myself. Thanks for your reply.

Hello, Yes i have looked at such a route, but the way i look at it is, it costs about £2300 for the insurace that uses a box to monitor me, and the whole information bascially said "Earn more miles etc with good driving or buy more" When im already paying over 2 thousand pounds for insurance, and ill be paying a small fortune for my car, and all the petrol im putting in it, to have some company control how much i can drive it is a step to far in my opinion (I know that with any insurance if you say your going to drive 5000 miles then do 6000 theres a price to pay but i think this one actually says you can drive X amount of miles a week and if you go over it... and i dont wanna be thinking "Well, id like to take my friends bowling tonight but i might go over my allowed miles...) Thanks for the suggestion however!

Thanks for your suggestion, i thought i was on to a winner untill i read your last edit HAHA. Dont remind me of my sex it makes me upset! LOL.

I have to say, im confused how there aloud to have such a diffence in price based on your sex, i know its based on crashes statistically, but im sure less black people have crashes than white, or the other way around, its statistics, however you wouldnt be able to change a insurance quote based on the colour of someones skin because that would be rasist. However you can base it on gender, which im sure is called sexist.. but i wont open that can of worms! hahaha.

To put into context, my GF is running a 1995 N reg polo as her work commute vehicle (she does 60 miles a day) so yeah 10 years old is nothing really.

Sorry about that :o - Are you a student and/or have a job?

My dad used to work in the insurance business so I know a few trade secrets ;)

I totally agree about the sexism thing - b***!!!! really, but one thing to bear in mind in a few years it WILL go down, OH's is down to £700 now on his own policy after 3 years of driving.

I am a full time worker, but as im sure most people can understand when your earning £3.97 an hour (for doing the same job as over 21's who get £5.97 an hour) its bloody hard making ends meet at the best of times. I need a car to get a better job, as living in a rural area makes public transport either not an option or a very time consuming option (depending where im heading).
    Thanks!
