Another Young Driver Horror Story!

Hello all.

This is my first post on MSE so please go easy! haha!

So, as a 17 year old person who is currently learning to drive i have been shocked by the price for insurance... (yeah i bet you've all heard this before!)

I have been saving for a good 6 months for my car insurance and ive managed to save 2k. So, i was quite confident i would be able to be covered for that (and i actually thought i may get some change! How silly of me).

I would like a Corsa or some sort of 1.2 or less engine car, (clio, punto.. you know all them sort of cars) and my cheapest quote for any of the cars (there all around the same) is £3,994 a year.

ive read your tips, and ive tried everything i can think of to lower the price but nothing i do makes a difference! Im going to be really really annoyed if i could afford the car, afford the lessons and test and also afford the petrol, but i get done over by the stupidly high prices for insurance!

I dont understand how its so much, i have two friends who both started driving when they passed at 17, they both have 1.2 corsas, and they both paid about £1500-£1800 for there first insurance, and this was only last year! How come im getting such massive quotes?!

Any help would be brilliant!

Thanks a lot!

Thanks for reply and suggestions, My relative probs wouldnt let me put her down, but my parents both have max no claims, and my dads a instructor for the IAM (institute of advanced motorists) do you think putting them as a driver would help? or does it not work like that? Im 17 in answer to your question.

Thank you for your reply, and congrats to your daughter for passing! Me being a male is sure to raise the cost for my insurace, as my friends who are female have told me that there insurance was high but no where neer as high as mine. I will look into the sites you gave me. Thanks.

Yes, definately play around putting various combinations of the people you mentioned as additional drivers.

Ditch the idea of a 2000-2002 car. Get an old (but safe/reliable) car and run it for a year TPFT. That will get you a years no claim which is invaluable at your age. Then upgrade to a better car as you get older/more no claims/insurance prices come down.

I started of with a 998cc Metro at 18 (ok 12 years ago now) and I was paying a damn site less than my mates with flashier motors. And because of that I could actually afford to use my car, rather than it sitting on the drive looking nice with no petrol in it or tax etc.
