You evidently haven't got to the student stage where you'd clean toilets for money.

McDonalds is a job and will pay for food. Do it. :)

    lol - thanks :)

I'm not poor as such, I could do with the extra money for my car and to help with bills.

I don't go out getting smashed every week either, actually never. I go snowboarding every week though which is pricey.

Generally it's just for piece of mind as we have our own place and pay 50% each for all rent and bills, so I have large outgoings.

I'm down near Leeds, so nowhere near Stirling I'm afraid :)

I'm just going to go for the interview, give it a chance and see what it's like..

Maybe I'm just thinking too much about it lol..

My last job closed down in May last year, and I really miss it, it was a great job and I worked with great people.. just feel like nothing will compare.

I there no National Trust/English Heritage properties? Hotels? Tourist attractions?

Pity you're not closer to York.
  • What I'm certain that none of you know (apart from Current Worker) is that McDonald's offer ALL their staff the chance to get nationally recognised English and Maths qualifications through their MyLearning programme. No other major employer does this.

They also have an award winning NVQ in Hospitality and apprenticeship programme and offer fantastic chances for advancement.

Many crewmembers working part time in Uni become Crew Trainers and even junior managers, with great prospects for extra pay and promotion.

This should help to dispel a few misconceptions:

    And career suicide.

That's the opinion from the 'posh' side of the hospitality industry. I don't even think I've met a manager who has done a hospitality course. We learn on the job, from our customers.

lol...no other major employer does this because they prefer people who can read, write and count in the first place.

I'm pretty sure manager who doesn't allow staff off the premises would actually be breaking employment law.

There is no requirement for people to be allowed to leave the workplace during their statutory breaks during the working day - and in some cases this would not be possible eg because of on-site security measures or changing into/out of protective clothing.

It's reasonable to not allow food prep employees to leave the premises in kitchen clothing if they are going to return to the premises and handle food.

It may also be reasonable to not allow food on the premises that has not come from the restaurant's authorised suppliers because of the risk of cross-contamination.

However, there must be adequate rest and break facilities.

Sadly, all the data I have that contradicts that blinkered statement is confidential.... but it exists.

Yes but the food people bring in is hardly going to be in the actual kitchen where burgers are made? If I was told I wasn't allowed to leave the premises or bring my food in I wouldn't obey it! I would bring my own food in and leave it in locker (or alternative place). You can't expect people who work at McDs 5 days a week to eat the food every shift! It's not healthy and is just an excuse for the place to make more money.
  • Worked at a BK from 16 to 21.

Bloody hard work but set me up for life. Learnt more in that job than I ever did in school. Courses and training were good. Enabled me to buy my first house at 20 for the pricely sum of £42K. Most of my friends who did 6th form/college, are just getting on the housing ladder now with mortgages of £150K+

Actually went back a cpl of years ago whilst I was inbetween jobs. Enjoyed it, crap money but fun nevertheless. Good hardworking people, salt of the Earth and what not.

Those who knock it are simply snobs imo. The job may not be the best in the world but it offers much to many who couldn't work elsewhere for whatever reason.
