They employ school leavers for many reasons, one of those is that they don't know their rights when it comes to employment law.

  • I currently work in McDonalds.

Lets just say that I get one of the best pay rates in my town :). I have to say that it is all down to each restaurant with how they all treat their staff. I currently enjoy working there but it is a very stressful and tiring job when you are doing 6/8 hour shifts. I have been regularly doing 8-12 hour shifts now. If you can handle that kind of work place then by all means, apply for it.

About 20 years ago, I worked for BK. Two rumours went around about McD's:

    1) They had the best management training programme going.
    2) On a particularly slow day, an area of floor was cleaned 6 times before a customer stepped on it.

Having said that as a customer, McD's always looks cleaner behind the tills and the kitchen area than BK.

    Good luck on your application.

Urgh - I worked for BK - also about 20 years ago and it was soul destroying! All the good staff left to work at McD's for better conditions and better wages :D I just left :rotfl:
  • The problem with trainee management at McD, KFC or BK et al, is that you couldn't get a job elsewhere in catering. I was trained as a catering manager by a Michelin star chef. 99% of HR personnel would laugh you out the door [if you got that far.]

I keep swinging from an ideal chance to get some shift work and pay in, to absolute horror at working there.. lol..

All that, and I haven't even been offered a job!

I think my problem is that I don't NEED a job, I can manage okay without until the summer, and then I would like a full time job..

I keep thinking I'm going to hate it :(

  • Hmm Would I employ someone with nothing on their CV or someone who had at least done some work somewhere during time at uni?

Where do you live? I been lucky enough to live in Stirling so there is plenty of tourism jobs that are hiring right now: Historic Scotland, a Safari Park, Loch Katrine, hotels . . .

They are normally advertising now for April starts. Might be worth doing some research on the internet.

I worked there during my summer holiday one summer whilst at University.
The following summer I used that experience to get work in the kitchen at an American summer camp. That was a fantastic summer :D and also I got a better pay rate than the counsellors who worked with the kids on the basis their job was more 'rewarding' than mine.:)

I'm down near Leeds, so nowhere near Stirling I'm afraid :)

I'm just going to go for the interview, give it a chance and see what it's like..

Maybe I'm just thinking too much about it lol..

My last job closed down in May last year, and I really miss it, it was a great job and I worked with great people.. just feel like nothing will compare.

What I'm certain that none of you know (apart from Current Worker) is that McDonald's offer ALL their staff the chance to get nationally recognised English and Maths qualifications through their MyLearning programme. No other major employer does this.

They also have an award winning NVQ in Hospitality and apprenticeship programme and offer fantastic chances for advancement.

Many crewmembers working part time in Uni become Crew Trainers and even junior managers, with great prospects for extra pay and promotion.

This should help to dispel a few misconceptions:
