Working for McDonals..?

Just reading the post about the smell brought it all back!!
I worked in McD's while a student 20 years ago and as I remember it the pay was a bit higher than other "unskilled" shop jobs and regular pay reviews gave you 5p-15p an hour increases 3 or 4 times a year. Things might have changed, but all McD's used to have on site washing machines and dryers for the store's cloths and we could wash our uniforms there if it wasn't in use at the time so you may be able to do this if you only get 1 uniform (I seem to remember having several).
During busy periods it can be very hectic and all systems go, but I remember there being a certain camaraderie amongst the staff which made the thw work enjoyable and time pass quickly and overall, while I'd not really like to work there now (it's for the young folk :P) I've already suggested it to my son who is away at uni as a good place to work to supplement his loan.
It's only a game

It's certainly better than being unemployed. Just don't eat the food.0

If i was an employer and someone had on their cv that they had worked at McD's for a decent period of time then they would score lots of points! It's a hard working and fast moving environment, a slacker would soon be found out and shown the door...
I think its a real shame there is some snobbery towards fast food workers, the job may not be glamorous but the people work hard and often for minimum wage.
I say you should go for it, but only if you want to work hard!Mortgage free!
Debt free!
And now I am retired - all the time in the world!!0 -
About 20 years ago, I worked for BK. Two rumours went around about McD's:
1) They had the best management training programme going.
2) On a particularly slow day, an area of floor was cleaned 6 times before a customer stepped on it.
Having said that as a customer, McD's always looks cleaner behind the tills and the kitchen area than BK.
Good luck on your application.0 -
Im at uni and working at mcdonalds so will give you my opinion
The hours are fab, they are so flexible e.g during term time they give me 1-2 shifts a week, during holidays i get 20-30 hours a week.
When i have exams they are happy to give me a week of work to study.
The discounts you recieve are fab.
The work is not too bad, very repetive, but if you have a good team you can have soo many laughs.
The pay aint the best, but not the worst either depending on your age.
There is always chance for pay rises, promotions etc.
Id say go for itI love working there and wouldnt leave unless I had too
Will not be a fat bride...

AJAXING!! Do they still do that? I worked there during my MSc... I had the same precoceptions you have. I'm still friends with some McDs collegues from 15 years ago, but none of my MSc course mates!!
It's OK work, it's fun and it'll take any snobbery you may have (well I had!) and make you look at those less fortunate than youself in a much more positive light. It won't be the job of a lifetime. And you smell a bit burgery when you get home.. but you'll not regret it.0 -
