    Maybe you inhale it.. lol

    Nah, definitely through the pores.

One of my student jobs was in the local bowling alley. Everything was fried, the acne!

I worked as a cleaner in boots too, I got bad acne doing that one too, and a cough from inhaling so much dust.

Ewww, drastic measures, I'll have to have face wipes for my breaktimes!

  • Hi all,

I'm doing research for an article on schemes such as this. I'm looking for people who have had bad experiences: maybe they didn't learn anything or felt they were underpaid for the work they did?

If this sounds like something you could help me with, or if you know someone who might be able to, please get in touch or pass on my email.

All identities will of course remain hidden.

    cheers,

    Sam

My DS started at McD's when he was 16 to give him some cash while he was at college and uni. He got a very good Maths degree which looks great on paper but gave him only 1 interview and no relevant job!

After a few months of disillusionment he went back to McD's, hoping it wouldn't be for long but he worked hard and is now managing the joint!

People turn their nose up at this kind of work but it has provided him with a steady job and some self respect which was more than can be said for the years of time and money spent at Uni sadly.

PS He doesn't smell now he's swapped the uniform for the shirt and tie (but I remember it well)!

Just wanted to add that I worked for McD in during my final year of Uni when I was ~22 and hated it! I was on the till and drive-thru mostly which was very busy, but as people have mentioned the smell was horrible. Everything was so greasy and I refuse to eat there (or any other fast food place) anymore. Yes, it was a bit of extra money and I perhaps learnt tolerance of frustrating situations, and it was something to put on my CV.

But OP, I would make sure I'd exhausted every other avenue first! Can you not find something that would be a little more relevant to your future career? Speak to your Uni jobcentre maybe, or see if lecturers have any connections with companies? I know there's often a shortage of PT jobs in Uni towns, esp atm...
  • I dont understand why theres so much stigma associated with working at McDonalds. All money is good money and you will get great work experience for the future. Go for it. You have nothing to lose!

I worked at McD's throughout A Levels and Uni and I learnt a lot about hard work, time management, organising yourself and dealing with the general public.

I left McD's to do various other temp jobs (credit control, customer service, purchase ledger) as I was trying to break into working in Accounts.

After a couple of years, I finally got an interview for my first "proper" job, working as finance assistant in the NHS.

The interview was quite challenging, competancy based - asking lost of senario based questions. How did you deal with this type of person and that type of situaton etc etc.

I found more and more I kept refering back to my McD's experience and not the 5 different companies I worked for since then.

I thought I failed but I got offered the job! So the McD's experience must have counted for a lot, even though you wouldn't think finance assistant roles had much in common with McD's.

Or maybe it was winning "Crew Member of the Year" having only worked at McD's for 6 months at the time, that gave the right impression.

Funnily enough, its been like 20 years since I got that recognition and I still recall it with fond memories!
