Just butting in a little with the ladies who are the higher earners, my cousin was in that position, when she went back to work after mat leave she opted to work 4 days a week and so did her husband, so that way they had one day with baby each and only needed 3 days childcare -but the earnings were better than if she'd gone to 3 days and he'd stayed fulltime. Might be something to consider for some people. Right butting out again...fran-o0

We use reusables, DH is pretty good with them he can use any of them and will even on occasion put them in the washing machine, but they absolutely reek! She's 17 mths now so wees like a horse and also poops like one!!
I've got some newborn ones ready for bump. I think its a case of if you want to succeed with them you will and if you have somewhere for them to dry as the winter time can be a pain.
I'm not sure when I'll be heading back, we get 13 weeks full and then 10 weeks half pay or 18 weeks full pay. I haven't been able to save any money this time round as we needed to buy 2 new cars this year so we are shelling out over £400 a month just for those. I say new not brand new just new to us!!
We both earn around the same, if he gets bonuses then he earns more, but not guaranteed.
It's just lucky we don't have to fork out for child care and fingers crossed my parents are trying to sell their business and have said they will take on almost full time child care. We won't need them everyday as I work shifts and DH works from home, but would help us out greatly as no way could we afford to send two to nurseryGot married 13/11/10

Hi ladies
I popped into ask a quesiton and then disappeared you must have thought I was really rude.
On the subject of mat leave I had 7 months wiht DS but this time I am taking a year, we have managed to save the difference between mat pay and normal pay to account for the drop in wages.
As far as nappies go we are using disposables, i did think with DS were would use reuseable but he was a winter baby and we didnt have anywhere to dry them and using a tumble dryer and washing machine so mauch would have madet them cost neutral.
hope everyone is getting on ok, I have my 20 week scan in jsut under 2 weeks and I cant wait...0 -
Good point about needing somewhere to dry nappies... we don't have a tumble drier (no space for one!) and already struggle with having to dry our clothes inside as wherever we put the drier rack it's in the way, and that's with having a spare room to use... already worrying about all the extra washing we'll have with a baby, I just don't think we could do nappies too without the place turning into a Chinese Laundry!Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. I've been looking at reusable nappies too. I like the idea of them but I'm concerned that it'll be too overwhelming a task (not sure how I'll "bounce back", after birth/with a newborn/baby, with my conditions) so I'm working on the basis we'll use disposables to begin with and then decide. Newborns seem to fit in disposables better anyway, and we've been given a fair few of other people's left overs so we'll start with those and see how we get on.
As for my holiday (:j) we're going to the South coast of Spain for a week in a 4 star hotel, all inclusiveManaged to get it for just over £500 each, which for all inclusive is a good price I think? Hotel looks gorgeous and it's right on the beach and the reviews are brill too, including raving about the food (which is important in all inclusive!
). Morning flights, so early starts, but at least we won't be hanging around with no room waiting to go back to the airport after check-out on the last day
Seems to be pretty flat for access too, so wheelchair should be fine too
(not that my parents were very positive about how we'd find taking it last night "good luck being pushed in that plus struggling pulling your luggage" etc  Don't they know not to give a pregnant woman more to worry about?
)
I now have to release the irrational fear that something will go wrong on holiday...

bigzippy- don't worry people will help. I found when you're injured/pregnant people can't help you enough. There's bound to be a large family who can assist- don't worryGot married 13/11/10

BigZee- you'll just have to reassure you're parents that you're only taking a few skimpy bikinis and sarongs and won't need that much luggage at all
and I know it's not the MSE way but I'm sure there'll be a taxi driver/bell boy you can tip heavily to carry stuff for you
re: reusable nappies, i looked into it from an environmental perspective but apparently it's debatable how much better they are for the environment due to the materials needed to make them, the bleaching and the energy used in washing and drying them. plus they don't take up that much room in landfill- think it's like 5% whereas paper is 50% so i'll just make sure to recycle my paper lol
Welp, we've threatened our vendors with pulling outafter getting all excited that they'd set a date for exchange it turns out the vendors are 'nowhere near' exchanging on the ongoing property and are basically giving dates to keep us around.
So we've said exchange within the week for their preferred completion date or we walk.
I've checked with our mortgage company and we can just reapply and solicitors are no completion no fee so we'd just lose what we've already paid which isn't that much.
There's a few family friendly no chain properties in the area so it's not an empty threat, I will have bought a house before the end of October! lolLittle Lowe born January 2014 at 36+6

Thank you for sharing your maternity leave plans, I feel a bit calmer about it. Since I fell pregnant I have been saving as much as I can so hopefully 6 months although I may have to go back a bit earlier. Fingers crossed for a lottery win
As for the nappies we have a pulley in the kitchen and a tumble dryer so drying them shouldn't be too much of a hassle. I am more concerned about the extra work. This time I am hoping to breast feed and there will already be a huge increase in laundry etc so I just want life to be as straight forward as possible. Hmmm so much to think about. I might pick up a couple per month, they hold their value quite well so I can always resell them if they not working out.
I really need to get he nursery decorated!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
I have just posted an ad on freecycle asking for reusable nappies, well you don't get if you don't ask. Going to see how much I can get from people on freecycle, seems lots of people give away childrens bundles of clothes quite often so I might not have to buy anything clothes-wise for baby for awhile. Fingers crossed I can find some furniture.
I'm starting to get a bit worried about OH and his job, his probation was extended by 1 month and if he's not working when I'm on SMP I'll have to go back to work earlier. I want my 10months offDiary: Getting back on track for 2013 and beyondDEBT FREE 13-10-13 :dance::dance::dance::dance:

BZ, you'll be fine on holiday I'm sure! There are always people at the airport/hotel etc to help people with their luggage when they can't manage on their own! Just worry about making sure you've got enough suncream!
Hope the house sale gets sorted soon TL, I dread the day we decide to move, I hate every minute of buying my flat!
Hope your OH's job is secured soon Kerri, must be such a worry right now.
I couldn't sleep last night and realised it was because the baby was really active, kept feeling movement and tiny kicks (more like a popping feeling?), gave my belly a poke and baby must have realised it was misbehaving as it stopped after that!Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary.
