Hi Rumfeeble - i've just read your post and had to reply.

Same thing has happened to me, I'm 22+4 today and a few weeks ago at my big scan the sonographer said before she even started that we may have to be called back for a re-scan if she can't do all her checks because of positioning etc, she said if there was anything wrong then we'd be going back to see a doctor, not her. This immediately put my mind at rest.

She spent a long time trying to view the heart, bubs wasn't lying in the best position. She had a student in with her and she was explaining to him that at 20 weeks the heart is only the size of a thumbnail and is really hard to see everything due to having a moving target or one that won't lie in the right position. She said in a few more weeks the heart is much larger and clearer to see and asked if we could make another appointment for a rescan in 3/4 weeks as bubs wasn't for moving, appointment it's in 2 weeks time - I made it for 4 weeks after thinking that the bigger the heart the easier it is for them to see it.

I know it's hard but try not to worry, I'm thinking of it as an extra scan so I was excited when she asked for us to come back. I think it's great that they're really thorough!

    Good luck, stop worrying! :)

Big hugs rum, am sure everything will be fine but I can understand you are concerned. Stupid hospitals can be very insensitive, I am not exactly small size 12 but only 5.2 and there am was no issue with the weight or seeing the baby.

Personally I would go with the private scan, though we are paying 5k for private care so my perspective may be screwed. Would you consider doing the scan without your hubby?

Lol, we had told them not to come this weekend, didn't stop them! They live about 2 hours away, and honestly you'd think it was the other side of the world. They'd phoned mid week to say they hadn't seen us in ages (4 weeks isnt ages!) and they wanted to come on Sun. DH said no, leave it as we were both working Sat and would be too tired for visitors on Sun. Then they booked the bus anyway, and called on Sat night to say they'd be here Sun lunchtime! I honestly don't mind them visiting (too much ;-) ) but things like that irritate me somewhat. And it's only going to get worse, as they do a lot for my SIL and babysit for her several times a week, but come the summer SIL is going to be moving about 8 hours away as her DH has a new job, so inlaws will have more time to come visit us...I could understand it more if this was their first grandchild, but its number 10 for them!

Thanks for the heads up about the Recaro baby seat, we never got a chance to try it in the car but will def be doing so before we buy anything. Having a weird kinda day as I'm hungry but don't know what I want to eat, if that makes sense?! The thought of a proper lunch makes me feel sick, so I've just had some fruit and a choccie biscuit so far...have started getting cravings for jam donuts lol, but have none in! Glad to say morning sickness is passed (touch wood), not been sick in about two weeks I think, just feel bit nausea if I let myself get too hungry. Oh we'll, that's us half way through Monday now! Hope the rest of the week passes quick (and me and DH both have next weekend off, but aren't telling anyone in case of unwanted visitors, so ssshhhh!)

Rumfeeble, please try not to worry, we had the same problem at our 12 week scan, they couldn't even date me properly as bubs was in totally the wrong position. Walking, emptying my bladder, eating chocolate, nothing helped! I went back ten days later and everything was fine.

missmaid - thank you for your reply, feel better knowing a similar thing happened to you. Am trying to think that I get an extra scan as a bonus, just family history (the same thing happened to my sister and when she went back she was given terible news) I cant help but feel nervous.

Thanks Lao - if I pay for a private scan and they cant see much more than the hospital - because the baby is laying wrong or isnt big enough to see because of some extra weight I may be carrying then it wouldnt help me to be reassured

Thanks Bride2be - I am focusing on the.... when we went back everything was fine

You lot really do help me feel better just typing out the story is a bit like therapy and helps me think things through. I love how supportive everyone is on here :)

b2B... you (or rather OH) just need to be more assertive.. had they said we've booked the bus you say well you best cancel it then because we asked for you not to visit.

Scans we had 3 with Dot .. 22, 23 and 24 weeks and we still didn't get a detailed look at her heart or her brain because she was totally in the wrong position and refused to move no matter what we did.. in the end I refused to go back. At the dating scan they couldn't get an accurate date and they couldn't do the NT either.. I think it is fairly common. It took them 25 minutes to get the NT with this one.

I've just been for a follow up internal cervix scan, which is all still fine (I still have a 'lovely' cervix apparently)

Great thing is, I got another tummy scan! I have my 22 week anomolly one next week, so it was nice to have a sneak preview. They are pretty sure its a girl :)

    I'm excited!

Glad all is well MetV :D

I am deliberating over the 20 week scan... to cancel or not... it has nothing to do with the rest of the hospital just the radiology dept so it isn't like I need to wind myself up about it really.. I don't think I can cope with being in that building. I am also considering trotting over to OH's mums to have it over there or just turning up elsewhere.. the car journey would kill me but being at the hospital here might too.

We gave in and booked a gender scan for Wednesday night. Can't wait!!!

Bounty and the chinese predictor both say its a girl, personally I think its another boy so we shall soon find out :)
  • Rum We had to go back 2 weeks after our 20 week scan with DS, no amount of wriggling, jiggling, prodding or sugar was gonna move his lazy bum so they could get his heart measurements. When we went back they got them straight away no probs. With this one they couldn't get NT measurements because they were too much of a wriggler, hope they stay still on Friday for their 20 week scan!
Try not to worry too much, if you need the reassurance of a private scan then go get one, but honestly I think you've just got a shy baby :D
