We had a baby bath for DS and just used to use it inside the normal bath - then it didn't matter if we sloshed a bit and also we just needed to tip it up to empty it out. I occasionally got in the big bath with him, but to be honest found it easier to bath him on his own.

To keep the bathroom warm, we just had the heating come on half an hour or so before we wanted to bath him and kept the bathroom door closed to keep the heat in, so it was toasty in there by the time we were bathing him.

Good to see you properly over here MV :) I got some bootcut jeans from Next in the sale and they are a right pain as they don't stay up very well! Should be better when I have more of a bump, so I've hung onto them for now (mainly because they were only £12)

Our bathroom is also really small (there is almost no floor space, it's like a weird triangle which magically fits in a bath, toilet and sink but you can't really turn around once you are standing in the bathroom!!). I'm thinking of either using our kitchen sink in the early days (it's a Belfast sink, so plenty of room) or getting a baby bath but keeping it in the bath all the time and just filling it up in there. When DH or I need to use the bath or shower we'd just have to put the baby bath on the bathroom floor (standing up or something!).

I am glad that we aren't the only ones who are thinking this! We don't have a bathtub and thought that standing at the Belfast sink would be much kinder on our backs and easier to get to!

Thanks for all the tips re. bathing. I think we will have to go for a tummy tub or washing basin :) They wouldn't take up much room in the bathroom and would save us breaking our backs over the sunken bath. I have to actually get into the bath to clean it so would definitely not be able to bath baby in it. Our bathroom is not too chilly so I'll just make sure the radiator has been on to heat it up first. Or maybe go with the kitchen sink idea - I used to be bathed in the sink when I was a baby! :)

you know, our mums and grandmas did it and it didn't cause any harm. I do admit, I do find baby shopping overwhelming at times but I am fast coming to the conclusion that a lot of it isn't needed. Don't get me wrong - our baby will not go without and there are certain things that we will not scrimp on but I'd rather that we got what we needed.
  • My mum used to bath us in the bathroom sink.

Unfortunately there are pictures to prove it!

I couldn't agree more! A lot of marketing these days seems to be layered with guilt as well... A friend of mine went shopping for a new cot mattress (sensible, in my opinion, and one of the few things I'm not planning to get second hand), and said that the staff in Mamas and Papas made him feel like he would be almost negligent for buying the 'basic' mattress as there are far superior options available for the more conscientious parent (they didn't quite say that, but that's how he felt!)

It's such a big industry these days isn't it MrsJ? It's just as bad as the wedding industry can be at times - if you don't go for the biggest, best and most expensive then you are doing it wrong! Load of rubbish! Most of my gear will be second hand from my Sis and the stuff she hasn't kept a hold of I will be sensible about and not go overboard due to pushy sales assistants! Grrrrr! Your poor friend shouldn't have been made to feel like that!

Ok, so after my earlier comment about buying everything second hand, I've just been browsing car seats (brand new) on line :rotfl: It's another of the few things i'll buy brand new (uh oh, I sense a theme here, I could be at high risk of saying that about EVERYTHING I buy!!).

Anyway, what a lot of choice and all very overwhelming. Do any of you ladies who have already had babies and bought car seats have any advice? Maxi-Cosi seems to be very popular but also quite pricey.

Sometimes I wish I lived in the 1950s where you had one pram option (huge great big silver cross thing), no car seat and your baby slept in a drawer :D
