I was thinking about getting a doppler but my midwife advised against it, there were also signs up when I had my scan advising people not to buy one. I didn't think you could hear the heartbeat on a doppler until 15+ weeks at the earliest, so will be interested to hear how you get on!:heart2: Newborn Thread Member :heart2:

I have heard the same Jannine. I think the worry is not that they are unsafe, but that people can panic unnecessarily if they cant hear the heartbeat. So i guess it depends on if you are a panic-er, and why you want the doppler. I guess for me, i just wanted it so i could hear what it sounds like, and for once, my porky belly was in my favour, as i knew that it would make it more difficult/unlikely to find the heartbeat, so didnt panic when i couldnt.
If you want it for reassurance that everything is Ok, then i'm maybe inclined to agree with the midwives, that its not a good idea, as you are more likely to think not hearing it is a bad sign, and not just that beanie may be facing the wrong way!Married 13/03/10 #1 DD born 13/01/12!!

Well I'm a definite worrier, as my midwife already knows so maybe wouldn't be the best idea for me! If I couldn't find the heartbeat straight away I would worry! I think the signs that were up at the hospital so they should only be used by trained medicall staff as just hearing the heartbeat isn't a sign that everything is ok.
My midwife has invited me in to the surgery listen to the heartbeat on Monday when I'll be 16 weeks gone, she said there is no point coming in earlier as you can't always hear anything.
I'm still tempted to get one though!! :rotfl::heart2: Newborn Thread Member :heart2:

I've got an angel sounds - couldn't find the heartbeat at 16 weeks (I'm fairly well padded!) but didn't panic and found it a week later. Once or twice since then I have heard it only faintly or not at all, just because of where the baby is lying. Now at 20 weeks and I have the odd listen but can feel loads more movement so less likely to do it for reassurance, more because it is nice to hear, especially for DH who can't yet feel the movements.
I also took it to my parents so they could have a listen. My dad keeps commenting on how technology has moved on - with me no scans and the midwife listened to heart with an ear trumpet arrangement... I'm bringing over photos of my unborn child and a home doppler!!:heartpuls Daughter born January 2012 :heartpuls Son born February 2014 :heartpuls

My midwife refuses to do a 16 week heartbeat check anyway, as if SHE cant find it, then it has to be acted on, even though you still cant always hear it at that stage with a stethoscope. So even leaving it to midwives doesnt always stop the worry!Married 13/03/10 #1 DD born 13/01/12!!

:j Just bought a new travel system thingy from ebay for £30 :j
My first bit of proper baby shopping (maternity clothes don't count), very exciting!
Now we just have to store it somewhere until Feb.... I think there's still a little bit of space under the bed :rotfl: Might have to consider getting the attic boarded so it's actually useable, as we've filled the available cupboards already with our own stuff (well, mostly filled with DH's books, computer parts and train set bits... my Dad hasn't maanged to empty his house into ours yet, so he still has most of my stuff).0 -
My midwife won't listen to the babys heartbeat untill 24 weeks here-when i was last pregnant it was 16 weeks. I asked why it has changed, she said simply because a lot of ladies were panicking if nothing was found so early on and she had to keep sending them over to the maternity unit to calm them down! So now they are holding back till a bit later on. I admit i had been looking forward to hearing it at my 16 week appointment and left feeling disappointed! lol.
I've started buying a few bits and pieces for the baby now, some smaller things i already have but still need a lot of things.

:rotfl: Turns out the travel system I've bought is literally just round the corner from us. Well, that's one way to get to know the neighbours... :rotfl:
I was told at booking-in that the midwife will listen to the heartbeat if you ask her to. My 16 week appointment isn't until 18 weeks though, so I was planning to ask then.0 -
