Housing benefit has ruined our country. It has allowed greedy landlords to buy up properties and get paid rent courtesy of taxpayers. It cannot be right that an asylum seeking family with a dozen kids who contribute nothing to this country can get rent of thousands of pounds per week paid to their greedy landlord.

Council housing should never be better than a property that someone working could afford.

Housing benefit reforms cannot come soon enough.
Everyone is entitled to my opinion!

I generally find benefits claimants dirty people, and they have a horrid tendancy to smoke like chimneys. You can call me bigoted all you like, I judge as I find, and I dont like (in the main) what I see. Their lifestye is a cause of their poverty, its not the other way round, despite what tree huggers like to tell you.

Bigoted? I should damned well say so!!

I am in my mid 50's, have worked bloody hard all my life (self employed), and until last year have never claimed benefits. Then my husband died suddenly, I lost not only him but also my income as the business had been his, it happened at the worst possible time, early in the year when all the bills, tax, VAT, etc., were due, and the only time of year we dipped into the red. The pressures on me, as his executor, were immense, a couple of his creditors made my life a lilving hell, I ended up suffering from such severe depression/anxiety/agoraphobia that I was unable to work, so for the FIRST time was forced to claim benefits, which I found humiliating to say the least. Does this make me a "bad person"? all I can say is, thank God my neighbours were not asd bigoted as some of you on here! and thank God we had worked so hard throughout our lives that when I finally managed to sell our home so that I could pay the people who had made my life so hellish, I had enough left over to buy somewhere else and put enough aside to live on for a few years until I feel able to work, or I may well have ended up living in a HA house somewhere, being considered part of the "underclass" by the bogots on here!
Don't lump everyone who cannot afford their own home into the same bracket, and instead of condemning out of hand, you should be thinking "there, but for the grace of God, go I"!

Oh, by the way, I also smoke like a chimney!
  • You know what? I'm bowing out at this point.

I come from a family of 6, my husband from a family of 7. My mother was very very working class, I was brought up in Oldham. I know what it's like to be treated as scum. As a teenager I had grown men try to maul me, presuming that I was a slapper. I was assaulted by taxi drivers and laughed at by the police when I reported it, what did I expect after all? A young girl going out at night in Oldham? Surely I was up for it? All of my friends left school with no qualifications and most got pregnant. Nothing more was expected of them. Unless you have been brought up in that environment I don't think you have a right to point and judge, no.

The way the working classes are described 'breeding like rabbits' you insensitive idiots! How can you dehumanise a whole section of society? You might not like them, you might not understand why they are like that, you middle class business men who know only how to sneer and leer at young girls whilst professing yourselves to be holier than thou. You make me sick, because I have met your kind when I was a young girl. There is no point in discussing anything with you bigoted idiots. Discussion is beyond you, all you know how to do is insult and gain pleasure out of doing so. You were brought up to think you are better than people like me, but I happen to think that I am far far better than people like you.

I'm sorry this thread has brought out the bigots, but I guess it's not surprising that there are still a fair few idiots out there.

You do appear to have a bit of a chip on your shoulder.

Don't think that anybody has dehumanised a whole section of society, possibly with the exception of those that actually chose to act irresponsibly. some behaviour is in my opinion unacceptable no matter what excuses you come up with.
  • Yes I do ILW. Because you and darkpool remind me of when I was a teenager, the same attitude prevails still. When you talk about the working classes as scum, you are calling me scum. Because I am working class.

I have no problem with decent working class people that have decency and a set of personal standards. Unfortunately, the vast majority live off the coat tails of those who work their butts to the bone to scrimp a living together for themselves.

I have no respect for smokers, those that refuse to work or choose to get up the duff for a council house. And I dont particularly care if you think that is bigoted, I really dont. I hear lots of excuses, I see very little self bettering and doing something about their situation. Thats because they like to see themselves as victims, when actually, its their own fault for being bone idle.

Too much has been given to the shouty minority when quite frankly, they should have been left to rot.
  • Bigotry is borne out of ignorance and believing everything the Daily Mail says to be true. You are looking at a snapshot and a very bigoted snapshot at that. The majority of people in the poverty trap are there through no fault of their own, people like rosyw, people who have lost their jobs. There are plenty of examples on this thread of those 'scum' actually turning out to be decent people and nice neighbours, but you choose only to hold aloft those examples which fit with your own arguments. Therefore there is no point arguing with people like you, or ILW or darkpool or the others who have chosen to insult and degrade, because you are only showing your own ignorance which fuels your contempt and this knee-jerk reaction. You soak up Daily Mail nonsence like !!!!!!, fuelling yourselves into an ectasy of bigoted rantings. You poor fools.

I have never referred to "working class" people as scum. I was bought up on a South London council estate myself. But there are scum around and being working class does not excuse it as you seem to believe.
i am not even sure what working class means.

"you middle class business men who know only how to sneer and leer at young girls"

what a true bigot you are. imagine calling a whole section of society p'philes. shame on you!

ps i have nothing against the working class. however i do have a problem with people who have never done a days work in their life getting benefits. the same type of person who goes out with his mates and stabs a stranger for the sake of it.
