Car noise has upset someone

Might not be an exhaust issue, the RC40 used to be favourite on A series engines and that was pretty quiet.
I seem to remember that sidedraft Webbers (which I’d expect on a 1380) make way more noise that the exhaust at low revs.
Particularly as there isn’t much room on minis to get a big filter in, the ones I knew tended to run short stacks with maybe a bit of foam0 -
There is a van that parks opposite our house that is generally started at about 5.45am and left to idle for ten minutes before being driven off. I can't say I appreciate it but I don't think there's much I can do.
If they are leaving the van running with no one in or near it, this is called "quitting the vehicle" and the police can issue a fine, also if it "gets stolen" whilst idling, then there will be no insurance payout.
.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
Alternate different part of the road where the car park so it does not annoy the same neighbour for more than a night or two, or look into ways of reducing the exhaust noise like others have mentioned.0

For goodness sake this is someone just starting up their car to go to work , I have neighbours who start work at all hours of the night and day , my own husband regularly goes at 6am, its just something you have to live with part of everday life in a city... its annoying but there is nothing to be done about everyday/night noise..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

No it's not. No one should have to put up with excessive noise. And most people don't go to work in a modified Mini that's way too noisy.
If someone ragged their noisy car up your street everyday for 6 months waking you up at all hours you'd get fed up with it too. If your neighbours car alarm went off at 3am every morning waking you up, you'd get fed up with it too. Or are you trying to tell me you'd just ignore it because "it's something you have to live with"?0 -

But I suspect that this isn't just everyday noise, this is probably noise by design, the vehicle probably has a non standard, and I suspect non conforming exhaust system.0 -

The issue is the noise levels that the car produces, as a result of engine (and quite possibly) exhaust modifications."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -
from a noise nuisance point of view I think I am correct in saying that as long as the car is road legal and the person is just starting the car and not revving the engine there is no legal action which can be taken. It makes no difference on if its a motorbike, car whatever. But if anyone knows further ....................0

Can I ask OP, does your other half start the car and go to work?
Or does he start the car, get out slamming the door, de-ice the car with the engine running, get back in (slamming door), turn on radio (loudly), realise forgot to de-ice rear windscreen, get out (slamming door), de-ice rear wind screen, get back in (Slamming door), drive off.
I ask because the above is pretty much part and parcel of how the man across the road was and he left for work any time from 3.30am to 7am. Added into the mix was the fact that his car wasn't up to much and would take at least half a dozen attempts of turning over before it actually started. Believe me, the morning it refused to start completely and was towed away on the back of a truck was one of my happier days. Thankfully it went to the scrapheap in the sky and he purchased something which actually starts.
I realise there is little I can do, and I realise the bloke needs to get to work, but I (and the rest of the neighbours) would have been more appreciative had he de-iced etc, got in and driven off rather than going through all that.
If OP's other half gets in the car and leaves then her neighbours need to realise how bloody lucky they are.0 -

BHP and Torque are inextricably linked - you cant have one without the other. Ultimately its BHP that moves the car though - you can prove this relitively simply by doing a dimensional analysis of the units in the equations of motion.0
