This morning there was an anonymous note through the front door saying 'Thank u 4 my wake up call each morning' Well I'm sorry but there isn't much we can do about it!

Yes there is. You could fit an exhaust that complies with the legal noise levels. If its loud enough that its waking people up, especially if their house has double glazing, its loud enough to exceed the legal noise levels. Many aftermarket ones do not comply with legal limits.

I had a similar problem with my brothers car, he has quite a loud exhaust on his car (not excessively loud/cheap but louder than normal) the sound is very deep and creates quite a rumbling sound. this sound would set off 2 car alarms on our street (one being the immediate neighbour's car). this happened for a fair few weeks, my brother would never rev the engine when he came in from work (bar manager, coming home between midnight/1am) but the alarms would go off merely due to the tone of the sound.

The car alarm next door suddenly stopped going off, a couple of weeks after I was talking to the neighbour and they said that although it was annoying that the alarms were going off they appreciated my brother was not driving in a manor to cause the disruption. They took it upon themselves to get their alarm altered to somehow desensitise it therefore stopping the alarm activating so often.

I thought that was nice how, instead of arguing about the situation, they looked at it subjectively, assessed what could be done and went out of their way to solve it.

Perhaps some people are just nicer than others......

Hope you manage to find the person who is clearly upset about the noise, and figure out a nice compromise

There is a van that parks opposite our house that is generally started at about 5.45am and left to idle for ten minutes before being driven off. I can't say I appreciate it but I don't think there's much I can do.
does this happen through the summer as well as the winter? Just thinking the driver may be de-icing his/her van in order to drive it safely?

must admit after living below 'neighbours' who would turn their washing on from 12am to 2am in the morning or turn their their sub woofer up to max im on the side of ... tone it down please.

because some people are light sleepers and you must be waking someone up every morning... 2 hours before they need to be up. which will be ruining their work days lol.

Replace the car, silence it or park away in my opinion. Its prob not just that neighbour who is !!!!ed off too.
  • the thing with the noise test is that im sure its carried out at 2500 - 3000rpm my vauxhall which is painfully loud is actually well below the limit at higher rpms. probably down to frequencies and harmonics but essentially i would be better off starting her up and rev straight to 3000 rpm and getting out of there

My Nissan has that issue too. It idles at 650rpm with quite a deep rumble, but it fine once you're moving. I try to minimise it by moving as soon as possible after starting, because I can go through the warm up stages while costing (in gear) down the hill I live on.

Doesn't help in the winter though, I draw the line at sitting in a moving icebox with misted up windows.

You can get a twin-box RC40 system which will keep the noise down on a 1380 engine. Had one on mine, and it made a deeper noise at tickover speeds, but wasn't noisy until you wound the revs up a bit. The LCB manifold he's probably fitted won't help either. The RC40 is a good design and won't strangle the engine's breathing on a bored-out motor.
Motorcycle exhaust baffles may fit , but "Minis have weenie tailpipes" only applies to those with standard exhausts. With a 1380, It'd need fairly free-flowing exhaust.

Which is exactly what i was going to suggest. Ive had no end of minis in my time, ranging from 850cc`s upto a tuned up cooper with a 1293cc engine in it.

The mini (same as any car) is only as loud as you want it to be depending on what exhaust you put on it. Many people mistake loud exhausts must mean better performance, but it doesnt. The RC40 exhaust system is renown as one of the best performing exhausts you can get for a Mini and is one of the quietest high performance ones also. I suggest he invests in one of those if the neighbours are getting upset.
  • in a breif summary as i see it less noise can mean more torque and more noise is more BHP
    obviously less noise to apoint

bhp is a waste torque is where its at

i discovered this by going from a big fat stainless exhuast down to a thinner rally exhaust the bhp dropped slightly but the torque went up lots

You can ask them politely to drive off straight away.

torque is how far you take it with you
