Whilst I'm dozing in the garden during the summer, I'm woken by the neighbours children, I don't go an stick a note to them.

These days if you tried that you'd be arrested for assault and/or pedophilia.
  • mini's arent the quitest carts esp the old ones, 1380 cooper engines had the centre exhaust exit that made a decent deep rumble with chalk on. made worse with a leaky joint. OP go out start it up put your foot over the exhaust end and listen for a blow out of air down the exhaust if theres no leak after a bit the engine will stall.

you can have stanless steal exhaust made to standard specs no cherry bomb type noise. or buy a butterfly valve system.

They didnt make a 1380 cooper. From memory there was a 997 and a 998 - then they did the 970, 1071 and 1275 which were classed as the "big bore" ones. In fact ive owned a 1071 and a 1275.

On my 1275 cooper which i had bored out to 1293, at one point i must have tried nearly every combination of exhaust, including just having an lcb manifold going straight into a bit of pipe coming out the back of the car with no silencers at all. That was a bit too loud even for me, so i added a cherry bomb at the back and that worked for me.

Does it sound like this, by any chance?

Why would you de-ice before starting the car? It takes longer to clear the inside than the outside on older cars so you'll still be sad with the engine idling for just as long.
    That's his problem.

  • Hi OP. I think it does you credit that you would consider an apology. I personally would feel a bit put out that my neighbour felt they had to send an anonymous note rather than speak to me in person.

I think pullitears make a valid point. It could be worth your boyfriend considering if there are any other things that might be causing noise such as slamming doors.
Can I ask OP, does your other half start the car and go to work?

Or does he start the car, get out slamming the door, de-ice the car with the engine running, get back in (slamming door), turn on radio (loudly), realise forgot to de-ice rear windscreen, get out (slamming door), de-ice rear wind screen, get back in (Slamming door), drive off.

If you think your boyfriend isn't making too much noise it may be worth asking your mechanic to look at the exhaust when you get your next MOT or service.

I don't see that you can do much more than that without incurring an expense.

If it really does cause your neighbours a problem they can complain to the council who will ask them to keep a noise diary and may come out to assess the problem. If it's below a certain decibel reading there's nothing they can do about it. If I worked in the council I would probably laugh if someone complained that their neighbours car was too loud when they started it in the morning! Although I appreciate that it could be very annoying if you are on the receiving end of the noise.

Just stick to your original plan and keep the letter but don't let it worry you too much.

If they think you're noisy neighbours I used to live opposite a couple of guys who would play loud music out of their cars at 2am.
  • Ignore it - anyone who lacks the decency to speak to you directly and hide behind an anonymous note isn't worth even thinking about.

And eventually if the complainant does have the balls to face the op out he will win, no question. It's a given fact that if someone complains you have to disproove them. Don't get yourself into that situ OP.
Perhaps the OP and her partner appear not to be the sort that one can approach.

I've recently had to have a moan at the young lad across the road who sits in his girlfriends car in the early hours (sometimes up to 3am) for hours at a time with the stereo on just loud enough to hear the 'thump thump thump' Every hour or so they start it up for a bit and keep it ticking over.

I sent him a jokey note through facebook telling him that while I appreciated Love was blind, it isn't deaf. Seems to have worked :D

I don't think they only take decibels into account. It is the type of noise that is also considered. If someone is using a vehicle that could be considered to be anti-social (and having a noisy car running at five thirty in the morning is anti-social) they will take it quite seriously. Section 59 Police Reform Act 2002 applies I think.
