A single person needs to work a minimum 30 hours to get WTC as well as being over 25 years old. And be earning less than £12k per year.
Unless he has disabilities (and meets criteria) then its 16 hours a week.

  • My payments have stopped for both my children now, 1 is 18 and has finished in education which I understand, the 2nd is 16 and has gone onto an Apprenticeship for which he gets paid £2.53 per hour and is receiving on the job college tuition, I don't agree with this at all but have to accept it. My main concern is that they advise I have been overpaid by £378 due to my first child dropping off 12th June 2013 and the threshold for my earning comes down. They only paid me £250 p/m for both so why does this seem to back date that threshold back to April when he only dropped off June and they only paid me for him to end of July?? The other thing is that they advise I do not have to pay this yet as I have to submit my earnings for 2013/2014 next year and it will be revised on my total years earnings. This I am not prepared to accept!! Why should my earnings beyond the date I finish receiving any benefits from them be any of their business?? Surely they should ask for proof of earnings for the period 1st April to 31st August. I may now have to get another job to make up for what I am losing which means my total earnings for the remainder of the year will be higher. I could end up paying back all that they paid me for that period but it is then that I needed it. Has anyone else had this problem??

Hello - just a quickie. I had a letter when the renewals came through saying the "might" have overpaid me £47ish. They said they'd let me know when they've decided if they have or not. Anyone know how long this takes?! TIA.

Which tax year? Unless you're self employed and gave an estimated income for 2012/13 they should have sent you a final award for 2012/13. If it's 2013/14 then they won't finalise the award till you do your renewal at the end of the tax year.

They don't. If you were getting £250pm for 2 children, that's not much more than one child element (the rest being tapered by your income), so with just one eligible child you'd get very little in tax credits. maybe £40pm.

That's the way it works, tax credits use annual income.

2012/13. I've had a final award but it had this note at the bottom.

Weird - if it's a "final award" they should have decided everything! Is there anything uncertain about your circumstances last year eg income, whether some income counts, disability elements etc? What does the calculation show?
