Tax credits are based on gross income (before any tax and NI is taken off) but you are allowed deductions for certain pension contributions, gift aid, childcare vouchers and certain other things.

You can follow the steps here: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcredits/start/claiming/income-hours/employment-income.htm which show the figures you need and the deductions.

Thanks, the websites says that I can deduct pension contributions....
"What you paid into a pension scheme that’s registered with HMRC. This includes a stakeholder pension and any Free-Standing Additional Voluntary Contributions. Don't show anything that was taken from your wages"

Based on this I guess that I can deduct my AVC's , my main pension is an NHS one deducted from salary...can this be included as a deduction or not? I think this will be the thing that decides whether we can continue to get the tax credits or not.
    Thanks

I claimed working tax credits for the first time last year so it's all a bit new to me. My circumstances have now changed and I don't think I am entitled to it from this year, but am still receiving payments. I have tried calling them several times but never get through and have not yet received a renewal letter. Can they not just see how much I earned last year from my p60 and sort it out that way?

can anyone help?? I sent my renewal forms back 26th may but have not heard anything. I phoned today but the helpline is saying it is taking up to 8 weeks to process renewals nad not to phone back until 21st July!! I returned the renewal the next day after receiving it. It seems unfair that if you were unfortunate not to receive your renewal pack earlier, you then have to wait 8 weeks to receive new award notice!! Has anyone else had similar waiting times!!

    Thanks in advance

I renewed on 17th May via phone (Just WTC & CTC, no childcare element). Had a letter requesting further info on 31st. Phoned with info same day. Renewal finally went through today, potential payment due on Friday, new payments starting Monday.
If you call, select option 4 then 3, and they'll talk to you :) x

Really? Oh, I had the same problem (question was Favourite Food? I could NOT remember what my answer was!), and all I had to do was answer some additional personal questions (about 4/5), then I was able to renew, and set up new security questions.

I have read on this very site that many people have had to do this before because they "failed" the security questions

Hi anyone out there willing to advise on this tax renewal information:

YR - 2009 TO 2010 EARNINGS £6K DUE TO SICK FOR YEAR AFTER ACCIDENT

YR - 2010 TO 2011 TEMPING ESTIMATED EARNINGS £14K WORKED DIFFERENT TEMP ROLES THROUGH YEAR ACTUAL P60 FIGURE submitted £18K , CALLED UP THROUGH YEAR WASN'T SURE WHAT TO ESTIMATE AS DIFFERENT TEMP ROLES THROUGH YEAR ADVISED WAS IT LIKELY TO BE MORE THAN 25K ANSWERED DEF. NOT ADVISED NOT TO WORRY.

YR - PRESENT 2011 to 2012 HIGHER PAID TEMP WORK ENDED MAR 11 ESTIMATED £13.5K BACK IN THE LOWER TEMP WAGE SAME AS LAST YR NOT THROUGH CHOICE.

WILL THIS RESULT IN AN OVERPAYMENT?

    thanks
