  • Also I have now downloaded the newest version of the Atheros AR5007EG and have installed it, the scan now says no drivers are out of date.

However my internet connection has gone from excellent to good and my RSSI number has gone from -43 to -61. Could this be anything to do with installing an updated version of the Atheros AR5007EG driver? Surely not?
  • Just another question, when checking the network cards are up to date how do I know which one i am using? There is 3 listed;

Atheros AR5007EG which the scan says is out of date so I am updating
Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport -which has the yellow exclamation mark next to it, which that web page says may be a problem
    NVIDIA nForce

Which ones am I using? The first one? Do I need to uninstall and reinstall the one with the problem or is it not even used?

The Atheros is the WIfi Adaptor you use, am I correct in guessing you are using Windows 7 , if so the miniport is part of the installation , and it will probably be ! because the driver for Atheros is out of date and the ! might go away.

  • You are totally correct, windows 7 and now the exclamation mark has gone. The signal strength is back up to excellent but the RSSI is still on -61 from -43 any reason why?

Most certainly, however the RSSI and most of the indicators Inssider show are provided by the Windows Stack and they may be more(or less) accurate with the new driver ;).

I am a tad confused because you initally kicked off this thread by saying.....
...recently my Siemens Gigaset router stopped working.....

But then say you had 'no problems' before the router was changed. Just to clarify - what went wrong with the old router?

I'm not being pedantic - it would just help to understand what went wrong with that and how you've arrived with the Huawei.
  • It blew up. Basically the extension cable I was using overloaded and blew up my phone adapter, bedroom side light and router. So I had to get a new router. I had only plugged in the extension cable the day before. If I had left it as it was when plugged directly into the wall then the old router would still be working and then this thread wouldnt have existed.

So if you were to just get a replacement wall wart/power adaptor for your 'old' router, it would probably still work - yes?

    EDIT:
Or get another router like it if you were happy with it:

  • Yes and no.

Yes - if it was just the adapter part and it hadnt affected the actual router

No - because it has been binned once the new one arrived.

I am one of those people who throw things away thinking "I wont need that again" and regret it at a later date.
  • David is a common name :)

    Stephen

I have tried all the things suggested on here today.

I have updated my wireless network adapter driver, I have also altered the radio type to 802.11g and changed the channel from 1 (which was shared by others) to 13, which no one else uses.

So far so good (touch wood).

I know you have said you will arrange another one but it MAY not be needed.

I will keep tabs on it tomorrow and over the weekend.

    Thanks

That's real handy with an old router :-) Someone can fish it out of the bin, power it up and pull off some useful data about you and your network :-) Are Talk Talk still including the phone number in the ADSL username?

Seriously, you may need to modify that kind of behaviour, if you don't mind me saying.
