    Im fully aware.....

However 50 is 20mph below this limit, what would happen if some random idiot drove through all 30 zones at 10mph?

How would the OP feel if he got stuck behind a cyclist for a good few miles??

I often get stuck behind tractors, I just wait until it is safe to pass, or I follow them patiently, no big deal.

Some people need to take a chill pill before they get behind the wheel, I find leaving a bit earlier means that I don't need to rush everywhere.

The national speed limit for a motorway and dual carriageway is 70mph!!!

My car hates doing 45-50, it's not quite fast enough for 5th gear!!! which means im either laboring the engine in 5th or over revving in 4th!

Speed does NOT equate to fuel consumption!

Do you drive around with only your parking lights on too? to save fuel?

Similar with mine. Below 55mph is 4th gear territory. The power from my engine in 5th gear only really kicks in when I'm at 85mph! But then I don't dare to see how fast it'll take me because I don't want to die!

I'd simply keep my distance then overtake when the coast is clear, if someone was driving at 10mph I'd do exactly the same it's no different to motorway driving!

so when the police do you for speeding your defence will be "aye but I've got a powerful engine your honour" :D

Whilst accurate, it would be more accurate to use %.

28.5% slower (70>50) is 21.5mph in a 30. Still slow, but not as exageratted.

Well, on a 400 mile round trip from Bristol to Brighton and back again a couple of weekends ago, nearly all motorways and dual carriageways, and cruising at or just under the relevant speed limit all the way, my 1.4 diesel Fiesta did 57.55mpg.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
  • I do not suppose the OP lives in Leeds and was on a slip road to the M1 yesterday evening.... While driving down the slip road to join I was gathering speed to MATCH THE SPEED on the motorway and the car in front thought it would be a good idea to take the WHOLE slip road at 40mph....
I agree with many on here that driving too slow is as dangerous as is driving too fast. When on a motorway, most people (correctly) assume that people will be driving to the conditions of the road. Someone going 50mph IS NOT, hence why they cause a tailback as all the lorries are overtaking you to keep at optimum mpg.
I am driving from Leeds to London tomorrow and I will keep at the speed of the traffic so as not to cause congestion and I can 100% safely say that that speed will be OVER 50mph
If the world is a stage... I want better lighting!

If there are overtaking lanes i dont get the issue? I used to have a car incapable of going over 50mph (old Mini 1000), did that mean i was not allowed on the motorway?

It annoys me when on a single carraiageway road people go 10mph+ below the speed limit, i can take 35 in a 40, or 45 in a 50, but when its 30 in a 40 or 40 in a 50 it just feels so slow... i could overtake but my car isnt that powerful to do it safely...
