a. Because it means I dont have to stare at your slow back end any longer.
b. Because I don't have to wait for hours for you pull away at the lights with your miserly gear changing.
What you're forgetting is that some people actually enjoy driving. And changing gear at 2000rpm every time and staying under 50mph isn't very enjoyable.0 -

I agree with many on here that driving too slow is as dangerous as is driving too fast. When on a motorway, most people (correctly) assume that people will be driving to the conditions of the road. Someone going 50mph IS NOT, hence why they cause a tailback as all the lorries are overtaking you to keep at optimum mpg.
I am driving from Leeds to London tomorrow and I will keep at the speed of the traffic so as not to cause congestion and I can 100% safely say that that speed will be OVER 50mph0 -

Geordie_bear wrote: »aye but your using more petrol dropping the gear & overtaking & for what to get that little bit further up the road & save you all of 10 seconds off your journey time?
So what if it uses up more petrol? We're not all tight Geordies! If people all wanted to drive to maximum economy then only rubbish little small engined cars would exist. Thankfully we don't, and hence there are many different cars of many different capabilities on the road. Vive la difference!
As for the 10 seconds argument, it doesn't add up. If I get past you I may make the next set of lights on the green but if I'd stayed behind you then maybe they'd be on red and I'd have to wait. Some of us have jobs/places to go to!0 -

However 50 is 20mph below this limit, what would happen if some random idiot drove through all 30 zones at 10mph?
How would the OP feel if he got stuck behind a cyclist for a good few miles??
I posted a couple of years ago on here of encountering a funeral cortege travelling at 30mph on the motorway. I was alert and got around them fine, but plenty of HGV drivers had a shock.
I subscribe to the theory of "reasonable progress." If you drive at 40mph in a NSL zone where people may not be able to overtake then you are a PITA. Your 40mph will waver down to 35mph at times which means your real speed will be even lower. The man without a signature.0 -
Geordie_bear wrote: »good for you but I bet driving from Leeds to London your average speed will be around 50mph anyway especially when you take in to consideration tailbacks & volume of traffic!
Actually the last time I did this trip my average speed was over 60mph and my fuel efficiency was 60.1mpg (drive a corolla diesel).. and these figures are facts as it has the onboard computer to work them all out.
when I got the car, my mpg was better at 60-70mph than at 50mph as I used the onboard computer alot then as it was a new toy!!! so you are not really saving fuel at 50mph...If the world is a stage... I want better lighting!0 -
I used to have a car incapable of going over 50mph (old Mini 1000), did that mean i was not allowed on the motorway?
I had an Austin Metro with the same engine/gearbox, top speed was 74mph......“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Meh, if your suggesting that driving excessively slowly will save fuel.... Then I say driving fast and getting there sooner means the cars not running for as long and therefore saves fuel.
Sarcasm of course, but this logic is just as flawed as yours.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
