I really can't see why you wouldn't drive at the speed limit if it is safe to do so? Surely the speed limit has been set and decided as being a safe speed that you can travel on that road (conditions permitting of course) Who would want to travel at 40mph if you have a clear, open road and the speed limit is 60mph? I really think it must be a lack of confidence, my Mum is terrible for driving very slowly, the traffic she has held up in her time! She says she just doesn't like driving fast!

I was given 3 minor's on my driving test for failure to make progress, I suppose you could fail for this reason if you drive below the speed limit for great lengths of time with no good reason. Though who am I to comment, I'm not a driving examiner, just a surveyor!
  • When i did my Class 2 hgv test (or whatever is it called these days) in december, i was told to drive to the conditions, but to drive at the speed limit wherever it was safe to do so,so as not to be causing an obstruction.(driving at the legal limit, ie 40 mph on single carriageway,is not causing an obstruction as you are travelling at the max legal limit, apparently .......)

oh yeah that's a clever thing to do whilst overtaking look leftwards & see what her reaction is! You must keep your eyes on the road at all times especially when overtaking.

There was nothing coming the other way. Had to check it was safe to pull in obviously
Nothing to see here, move along.

It could be argued that your mum is driving to her abilities.
far better than trying to exceed her abilities/comfort zone, by driving to fast surely?

Or it could be argued that if she can't cope with her surroundings whilst driving, she shouldn't be at the wheel.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

Try driving something big,(bus/coach,lorry etc) ... you need eyes in the back of your head!

Sounds like she can cope just fine at 40.;)

seldom go over 50mph on motorways & duel carriageways? So why are so many idiots still bombing around for? If your late for work then too bad you should've got up earlier & planned better!

Is anyone else seeing this familiar pattern?
Is your definition of idiot someone who doesn't think like you do?

My car is fully paid for and not worth much anyway, I still manage 45mpg from it (TDi) even if I drive at 90-100 ish for a fair chunk of the motorway journeys. When petrol was £1.20 a litre that still worked out cheaper than my old petrol car driven at 70mph. It's now costing me a bit more but it's still not significant relative to my total cost of living.

So the extra 30% since last year isn't enough to make enough of a difference relative to the value of time.
    Happy chappy
