Have you thought about sending your story to some sections of the media? Apple would love this kind of publicity...0

Mmmmmm - was reading this thread and as it went on and on and on, I was considering it to be a pile of pants when BOOM, in came post number 108 - if an officer was present in store and Apple staff could ID the person mentioned, there is no way the Apple staff wouldnt have pointed him out - where does DPA come into that.It would be pure Obstruction of Justice on their part
Sorry Op but I think it's all unravelled - got a few posts out of it though0 -

I would have to agree.
There is a specific exemption in the DPA for this:
www.ico.gov.uk/Q: If the police approach us for information under what circumstances should we provide it?
There is an exemption under the Data Protection Act that!can be applied if the police need some information to prevent or detect crime or catch or prosecute a suspect. However there are limits on the information you can release. If you are satisfied that the information is going to be used for this purpose and that if you did not release!the information it!would be likely to prejudice (that is, significantly harm) any attempt by the police to prevent a crime or catch a!suspect then!you can disclose this information.====0 -
Have you asked Apple for a PIR?? I would be going to the media if I were in your shoes.Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug).0

I don't believe Apple staff wouldn't point out a suspect in-store, coming from a related background, just wouldn't have happened, sorry.0

Just to add to things, I don't think Apple would go to court over it. For them, a new handset at cost would be less than getting someone to write the letter to the court! I think there is a good chance they will just roll over and settle once their "loss adjuster" has got involved.0

just for the people who think this isnt really happened, read and weep................

I don't doubt this happened, and I guess the moral here is to insure your phone. However, it does raise serious questions about stolen products and how the manufacturer deals with this.0
