I should say so, considering you've planted tomatoes and peppers. :rotfl:If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
Woooo, I've got another couple now at 19" and getting drunk on Phostrogen....0

My second place bean has now taken over first place at 17½". The first place bean has taken an unexpected left turn: it would be about 20" if it wasn't bent.
Am now considering fitting them with tubes to help them grow straight. Would they have to be clear plastic? If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
I thought of that a few weeks back and couldn't think what to use but most of mine are now growing quite straight so don't need to bother. I was thinking it would need to be clear. I heard years ago of people rolling runner beans up in a wet tea towel overnight before a show to get them dead straight but how bent they were I don't know.0

Everyone has gone really quiet, what is everyone up to?
We went to a national trust property today in Hereford and they had tomatoes outside which had lots of flower trusses on but no tomatoes yet so that reassured me...and we have a gardeners delight that is turning red! woo hoo0 -
Sorry Fay, I'm still lying down recovering from the shock of actually growing stuff.
Update from me - I have picked garlic, strawberries and sugar snaps, and have potatoes, chillis and peppers growing nicely. Lots of flowers on toms, but no toms yet. I've foraged a lot of raspberries, and have my eye on a bumper crop of blackberries which aren't quite ready yet. Am also hoping to get some apples from a neighbour.0 -
Our apple tree has lots of good looking apples on but we have no idea what variety it is, so no idea when it will be ready to harvest. Does anyone know how we can tell? When we moved into the house at the end of October there was about 10 apples left on the tree which I promptly made a lovely apple pie with (definitely cooking apples as my brave Dad tried one and said it was a cooker, and judging from his facial expression I didn't argue ) but how do you tell when fruit is ready to be harvested from a tree...we have the same issue with 3 pear trees although I noticed a squirrel helping himself to a pear the other day!0

I have 3 tomatoes (Ailsa Craig) in buckets in the garden and they all have toms on, but I did limit them to 4 trusses each, with not being in the ground. The seed was sown 24th April indoors. If I'm over the hill, where was the top?0

Place your hand under the apple and give it a small twist, if it doesn't come off easily it's not ready yet.
The timing can change each year I've had a few off my small one already but the rest will be another few weeks yet. Other years I've not had any till mid September, so do a test every year.0 -
I went away for a couple of days, leaving someone I thought I could trust to look after my beloved toms.
I return to very thirsty looking plants.
Everything else looks ok.
I'm spending this weekend trying desperately to remedy my tomatoes.
Beans are (finally) coming along. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0
