comment on the current consultation document for dla reform and put your points on there.

dla is a non income assessed benefit and personally i think the dla is there to pay for the extra costs of being disabled but asking the population to pay for the vat on your petrol as well as providing a car, insurance, mot, and car tax is ridiculous.

Everyone who drives a vehicle has to pay for the vehicle, insurance, mot, car maintanence, car tax and petrol and they often don't have the choice of not having a car and using public transport instead due to their home location or their work. These not costs which are
    unique to disabled people.

If you are on a low income you can claim petrol costs for hospital visits etc.

i pay no vat on my car (because modified from new)
i also dont pay vat on anything that is directly needed because of my disability i.e wheelcahairs hand rails etc

i need a car as i cannot walk at all or ride a bike etc,
so why cant we claim the vat back from petrol as it it directly needed for our disabilities?

before anyone says "thats what dla is for" the dla pays for the car which is vat free so why is the fuel not vat free as well ?

For items to be vat free, they need to be adapted for the disabled person. So, your car is adapted for you, your wheelchair is intended for use by a disabled person, etc. How would the petrol be adapted for the use of a disabled person?

And where do you draw the line? I struggle on public transport due to disability. Should I (or my parents, as I don't drive) receive vat free petrol?

Why? what about those of us low mobility? Just because we can walk, doesn't mean we don't need a car to take us everywhere. Your DLA is there to pay for these things.
