I have a tatty Escort, haven't been pulled over in it yet. Maybe I've been lucky?
  • I can just see the headlines in the Sun tomorrow-

  • The only time I have been stopped by rude police was when I was in my year old car and they were on foot jumped out from behind cars and stopped me. I had a light out so fair enough, I never realised though as it was in a lit area.

The best bit was when they asked if I had an MOT, I said no.

Then it all kicked off they radioed for backup, well a breathalizer so I had to wait there at the side of the road until a traffic car turned up with the necessary equipment. I should add that since the car was a year old it never required an MOT, I was being a smart !!!! but they were not polite to me.

To cut a long story short young police man on foot said to traffic cop this guy claims not to have a valid MOT to which traffic cop responded "Do you think its got anything to do with the fact his cars only a year old?"

Anyway, I was quickly on my way and I think someone was in for some extra training when they got back to the station!

I also has a spare bulb so was able to change that there and then, the traffic cops seem to not mind this but the bobby on the beat thought he had some major road traffic violation!

Quite often tatty looking cars have something else wrong with them either mechanicaly or insurance/Mot/tax side. That why they picked on you.

Funny that, all the cars I see with bald/underinflated tyres or defective lights seem to be much newer than my 'tatty looking' 14 year old car.

It has never been polished and has plenty of cosmetic war-wounds, however it is always MOTd/Taxed/Insured and safely maintained.

In fact, wouldn't it would be more logical to think that those struggling to keep up the HP payments on their shiny motor are more likely to try and skip the cost of tax/insurance/overinflated dealer repair costs?

(Not directed at OP by the way!)
  • been pulled a few times (each time for nothing). Usually there are two cops - the good one and the bad one. The bad one last time was on a mad power trip. I wasn't driving my own car which had their eyes lit up at first

I'd say her attitude was fine, judging by the OP. You can disagree if you like (and you probably will).

But from PERSONAL experience I'd say I've been stopped by more arrogant coppers than polite ones. I've come across more arrogant coppers in town centres than I have polite ones. And I'm always polite to the Police, regardless.

Make of that what you will. It's a fact that some coppers are knobs. And I expect the OP came across one last night.

How can you possibly say that?

I suspect that the poor copper came across a knob, I mean if the OP cannot be bothered to sort out a simple thing like wiper, then they deserve to get stopped.

I cannot recall the last time that I was stopped by the police, some on here seem to get stopped all of the time, why is that, I wonder?

You provided an opportunity for the police to stop and inspect your car and smell your breath etc.

Exactly. Any visible defect will attraction attention.

If you don't want attention then fix it pronto! For instance, a headlight bulb on Mrs V's car blew last Wednesday. I calculated that the next time I would have a decent amount of time to fix it would be on the Sunday. But instead I went out in the rain to fix it within 10 minutes of it blowing. It was a pain in the arris to do but I have the pride to want to make sure everything is 100%.

A lot of presumptions being made here.

    1) I do not have an attitude problem and was very polite to the Police officer, even though she seemed to be doing her best to find fault with anything possible.

    2) My car is not a tatty mess, or in poor condition. It's a pretty mint 2004 car. It has a damaged wing which is booked in for the 20th at a cost of £200 to me, when it wasn't my fault it got damaged. It's clean, it has new tyres, newly serviced 6 weeks ago and the wiper is something that had progressively got worse and I just simply couldn't afford a new one until it went in to get the panel fixed. Why everyone seems to think it's a quick and easy job for someone with no mechanical experience and no spare money to pay for it I don't know. I've been told it may need a new motor or the spindle may be broken, not exactly cheap for me.

Oh, and I will say it again.. the wiper is definately not a danger to anybody unless they are skateboarding on the tail of my car.. It is not sticking out anymore that the aerial and that isn't deemed to be a danger.

It's actually a very short wiper and only very slightly comes away from the car over the very top over the numberplate.

I could and would change a lightbulb thevery same day. It is far more dangerous than a loose wiper.

I would like to know if you could fix a rear wiper with a mechanical default in less than ten minutes? Or would you simply do what I did and presume that as it's not a danger to anybody (common sense can see that) then it will be okay to leave it a week and ask the garage to do it whilst they are fixing my wing?
