  • CEX - absolute rubbish in January 2012 when I tried to dispose of a Nokia E5-00. They promised £30 odd pounds for it, so I sent it off. Nothing happened for two weeks, then I got the 'phone back in a jiffy bag one day, with no explanation in the jiffy or by e-mail. It's in great condition, and Weeebuy have paid the £30 for it straight away, so what on earth CEX are up to I have no idea.

    Just a waste of time!
  • You asked for feedback on them. Your site suggested that I should get £25 for my old mobile. At the store, she insisted that this was the price at which they sold and offered me £11 to buy. So beware.
  • As a person who actually works in a CEX store, I thought I'd take a minute to clear some things up.

Phone grading. A grade means 'as new'. This means all accessories in the box and no scratches on the phone at all. If there is a mark on the phone that is visible to the naked eye then it's not an A grade.

B grades should have the box with the official charger and either the headphones or data cable. B grades can have a few light scratches. If the marks are in the middle of the screen though, you might get quoted a C grade.

C grades can have a few more scratches, but nothing excessive. Deep scratches on the screen may not be accepted. Any phone presented without it's original box or official charger may be quoted as C grade, regardless of condition.

Franchise and corporate stores differ when grading phones. Franchise tend to be more fussy. We want to buy your items as we have but in targets to meet, so we won't deliberately down grade your items or damage them purposefully. All quotes are provisional prior to testing. We try our best to give you an accurate quote but we only look ar your item at the till for 30 seconds. The tester gets 20 minutes, which is why they pick stuff up we may not.

Hope this helps! Any questions just ask in this thread. I don't mind :)
  • Sorry to double post, but I also wish to address the issue with regards to our stores 'smelling'. Now I can only speak for my store and those that I have visited, but the smell is not the staff, it's a small percentage of our regular customer base. Due to the nature of the business, we sometimes get customers in who have an 'odour'. Be these homeless people, junkies or alcholics, we can not ban them from the store for having poor hygiene unfortunately. It's a shame because it spoils the experience for you guys who have to stand in the queue next to them for 20 minutes.

Also, for those of you who are struggling to get through to head office with regards to phones or items going astray that you have ordered online just direct your frustrations to wecare@webuy.com. Persevere with them as it really is the only way you can communicate with head office. Even we don't have a number for them!
  • Phones as new but not in their original box are treated as grade B when selling on-line.
  • Hi All,

I used CEX after checking on the website these would probably pay the most for my iphone 16gb 3gs. I called at the shop not knowing what to expect as i've never used one of these shops before.

The assistant offered me £99.00 for my handset which was in perfect working order, the proceeded to tell me that they could not accept the wire (cant complaint there) it was damaged and she said they would have to use one of theirs at a charge of £5 (could have got one from the pound shop). I agreed to this because i could be bothered with the hassle.

The assistant said they needed to test it and it would be 40 minutes. I agreed and pottered about for an hour, went back and after umming and arring they agreed to to offer me £99.00 minus now £7 for the cable. I checked the CEX website and found they have categorized my handset as a class C.

I feel violated and ripped off, the handset did not have a mark on it and i should have got £142.00...

I could have simply taken this to the O2 shop and would'nt have had half the hassle and would have helped the environment, of and they would have given me £96.10.

These cowboys rely on people who are desperate and need money quickly.

NEVER EVER AGAIN WILL I USE CEX

I would rather trade it in for less money than give these muppets the satisfaction of ripping me off again.
  • What a waste of time this company is it ought to be taken off MSE "sell old mobiles list" AGAIN. Having checked their site I was given online prices for 3 mobile phones which as you would expect were quite reasonable to attract custom. I live in Leicester and they have two stores there so I tried ringing them. First waste of time, answer machine telling you to contact them by e-mail then disconnects you. I tried that 2 days ago still waiting for a reply.

Next second waste of time. I decided to go into both stores in person to be told SORRY NO CASH TODAY in both.I said I will accept a cheque or bank transfer and that was also refused. The sales person said I could leave my phones for valuation and come back in a few days. WHAT A JOKE.

MSE take them off your list to avoid this shambles of a company wasting other peoples time.

Have to say that my experience with CEX has generally been pretty good. I haven't used them frequently but each time I have taken items in for sale I have got the advertised price without any fuss.

Only today I took in an old Nokia 6233 and got £26.00 for it, the best price anywhere else on the internet was £16.00.

Have to say I would never buy anything from them, but as a means of selling old equipment I think they do ok.

Perhaps it is down to the individual store as to how good the selling experience is.

OK, I'll ask if nobody else is.

So, CEX Employee, perhaps you'll explain why your grading scale differs from the one of the CEX website?
Mint – Phone in as new/mint condition with charger, original box and all accessories.
Good - Working phone in good condition with slight cosmetic blemishes. Charger supplied. Missing one or two accessories or original box.
Poor - Phone in poor cosmetic condition. Charger supplied but missing accessories and packaging.

Now, either you're saying that it isn't trued that A=Mint, B=Good, C=Poor - and these are the only options you can select when you sell, and therefore the only grades you can possibly get a price for, or you're making up your own grading that differs from the ones on the website.
