  • We bought a blackberry from the Cheltenham store last Christmas. It developed a fault early on. When we took it back they claimed the phone had been tampered with because 'stickers' under the battery were moved. We haven't tampered or moved the stickers. We don't know whether they have. The warranty doesn't mention this although they pointed out that under item 4 (in small print on the receipt) you can ask to see the full terms of the warranty.
The manager and a staff member looked in the phone while we were there and didn't mention the problem. They took it for testing for half an hour - when we returned the manager said he had noticed 'immediately' that the stickers had been moved and the warranty invalidated. End of discussion as far as he was concerned. Obviously if they didn't move the stickers and we didn't then the warranty system doesn't work. We've spent hundreds of pounds there. We won't shop there again and recommend other people think carefully before buying expensive electronic items there.

I received an online quote for 5 phones that I wanted to sell to CeX for £74.00. I checked each phone (all in good condition and working) and photographed them before wrapping each in bubble wrap and placing in a jiffy bag.
I received an email a few days later to say that they'd downgraded all of the phones and that one had a scratch on the screen and pad. And they requested security codes for 3 of the phones and the quote currently stood at £63.00. I replied informing them of the codes and that I was mystified about the damage they reported as I had found none before I sent them and told them that I had photographed the phones before sending them, securily wrapped.
I was then sent an email saying that none of the codes had worked and they'd be sending all the phones back to me. I received them this morning, all thrown together in a small jiffy bag with no other wrapping to protect them. Sure enough, there are now 3 scratches to the screen of one of the phones that are now clearly visible and a crack on the pad. And the other phones are scratched and scuffed where they weren't previously. I'm absolutely furious. Now I have phones to sell whose value will no doubt be significantly affected by the damage that they now have that wasn't there when I sent them.
Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend CeX to anyone wishing to sell their phones.

I would have sent them separately. That way the postage would be free, each phone would be independently dealt with and they would not be done as some kind of "job lot". I sympathise and wouldn't use them myself had I encountered the same experience (I haven't and have used them many times).
  • I recently use the Norwich store, I was a bit apprehensive but though well I didn't like my streak and didn't get on with it so selling it for something is better than nothing. I had looked at cpw and they were offerng very little so off I went to CEX. I was seen promptly by a very polite young woman who took me through all the details and said it would be about two hours. Off we went for lunch and came back just short of the two hours, the young man who served me found my phone straight away and said it was classed as A and offered me cash or store credit, as I'd bought a 4s from apple I asked for cash, there wasn't enough money in the till but he got more from the safe and paid me out quite a bit more than I'd ever expected. It was in immaculate condition and had accessories books box and a case so I guess it was correctly assessed. My experience was better then expected and positive.
  • I had a Mobile phone I wanted to sell. CEX appeared to give excellent value so I decided to sell online. Followed instructions and was given an order number and told a jiffy bag would be with me in a few days. It wasn't. E-mailed again asking what should I do about sending it to them. Told to cancel original order, and reorder online. Tried to find original order in their system but couldn't. E-mailed again as concerned about possible mix up if I sent second order if first one still in place. Totally ignored. Will not be doing business with CEX as even they don't seem to know what they are doing. I'm not risking business with them. Very unsatisfactory.

This is a feedback thread on gadget recycling firm

Anybody wanting to sell their mobile through cex,let me tell you about my shoddy experience in Huddersfield. I used a comparison website which valued it at £79 through cex. Took the phone in and it was valued at £69,then they decided because i didnt have the charger it was worth £54!! So i asked if i had a charger would it definitley be worth £69? 2 people said yes. So i bought a genuine charger for a fiver then took it back and left it to be tested. I went back 2 hours later only to be told the "tester" on that day thought it was only worth £45!!! I TOLD EM TO SHOVE IT! Then to add to it all the hassle and messing around somehow in the testing process my phone went from being unlocked to locked on vodafone only!!! So it cost me a fiver,my phone is now locked and i cant use the bloody thing as i'm on Virgin!! USELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Comparison sites work on websites. I always sell through the CEX website and invariably get what the offer price is (according to the defined grade, which is usually grade "A" in my case). I have never even been inside one of their shops, but the feedback generally suggests that they offer less and aren't very good at all.

I have no reason to stop selling to the internet site and still recommend others to do so. The shops are an entriely different matter. By mixing the two you have gone to the worst.
  • I got my indication of what CEX may pay and was pleasantly surprised until that is I went to their Bournemouth branch today  on the price comparison it said up to £47, well I thought that's a good price, I was expecting to get something lower but they offered me £22, not happy as there were web sites that offered more, i declined their offer, but sadly some people will just go ahead because they are there and can't be bothered to go elsewhere!! I think they should be more realistic when giving price guides. Just to add my phone was about 4 months old and in excellent condition, box included all the books everything! My opinion is they are rubish! :(

I've just sold yet another phone on their internet site and got exactly what was promised, as usual. The SHOPS seem to be rubbish (never been in one but must have sold about a dozen phones over the internet). Internet prices offered are higher and more reliable than branches.

I will probably be sending off another one them in the next few days.
  • Hey mobilejunkie how many phones have you got? And how come your the only person with a positive experience?
They practically called me a liar and stated that my phone wasn't unlocked in the first place (it came back from the testing process and wouldnt work with the virgin sim card i had used for the last 6 months)
Their customer service is just as useless as the rest of the company too.
    Avoid them at all costs!!!!
