Used them for the first time yesterday, selling old hard drives and an iPod Shuffle. No messing about, prices were as stated on the website. Pleasant staff, clean shop with no dodgy smells. I'm sure there are crappy CEX branches, but from my experience, Glasgow Union Street ain't one of them. Thumbs up from me! :)
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

I don't use CEX online as they are painfully slow to send stuff and also now they charge P+P.

Shops are ok. I like the fact that you can check stock availability and selling / buying prices. Sometimes finding the item can be a pain. (i.e. misplaced, stolen or displayed elsewhere)
I don't know about cash flows for the amount of sellers they get, I did have to go back the next day for cash once.

After reading the reviews about cex it didn't sound good but I decided to pay them a visit anyway to see for myself.

I was served straight away and found their service to be very helpful, I took in 10 mobile phones of which they quoted me a good price on 7 of them providing they tested ok. I had to leave the phones with them for 2 hours as you would expect as they all needed testing.

When I went back one of the phones had failed the test due to a screen fault which I knew about so they wouldn't take that one.
I was then shocked when the money I received was more than the original quote.

I think people give poor ratings to CeX as the prices given on the comparison site are for a mint condition phone and the chances are that your phone is not mint.

The prices I got for my phones were far more than the next best quote.

    I will use them again.:T
  • The above post looks like a CEX customer service rep.

    How they work.
If a phone sells then they will buy it off you for as little as they can. I gave them 2 brand new phones, they dropped 1 and graded it as a B. If I know what I did then I would sue there !!!. I had the last laff because them phones dropped from £80 each to £35 each. It was a three phone on the cheapest contract.
    Dont see them phones anymore.

The other thing is if you go into the shop and look at the A grade phone, you will notice that they are more like grade C, the reason why this is marked as A is because a customer service rep sells it to CEX so they get some pocket money to scam customers.

Final thing to say is that if you sell your phone yourself you will get a better price.
  • As previous CEX are useless. Broken promises and 2 return journeys.

They stop testing phones in store when they like with "open times".

    Once again dont bother.
  • I tried selling a Sony Ericsson K770i to them both in store and online... I agree with other posts, they try to wriggle out of buying if they dont want your phone.
On the website it quite clearly states the following - "Poor - phone in poor cosmetic condition." and "we will buy your goods as long as they work as intended.", so to my mind that means as long as it isnt completely broken they will buy it... not true!
The K770i works perfectly, and is hardly marked externally... however due to my daughter being a bit heavy handed putting memory card/sim card/battery into the phone at various times over the years, the imei label has a small amount of wear, but is still legible. However, this is the latest excuse not to buy the phone from me... previously it was that there was too much paint loss around the buttons, something I easily rectified with a new button set.
I will be contacting trading standards if the reply to my email is, as suspected, that they will not buy the phone. Why state they will buy it as long as it works, then not actually do so?
  • I tried to sell my Sony Ericsson x10 in CEX Doncaster. The first time I went The girl at the counter took a look at it, said she'd offer £70. I told her I didn't have the charger for it so she agreed £65 on that basis and took it to the tester. she then came back saying they didn't have any cash. I didn't understand the 'one -in, one out' rule they had so asked what she meant. I was met with a sarcastic reply 'you can't buy anything if you haven't got the money from selling can you?'

So I took the phone back yesterday to see if they had cash, yes they did. Again I was offered £65 so left it for testing. I went back an hour later and was told they wouldn't buy it because it didn't have a charger. However, the test had come back fine and they were no visible flaws. I was told to get a charger and I could have £65 for it.

I went again today with a charger I'd found. They wanted to test it again saying if they hadn't tested it in 24 hours they had to redo it. I thought nothing of it and let them do it again. I went back later for the phone and was told unfortunately they wouldn't offer a penny for it as it did not start up, and had a corner missing from the casing. I explained it had worked the previous day and had no flaws. I asked if they could check this on my account. Apparently they don't keep these details on the account I was told.

I had not touched my phone since it was tested the previous day, and there had never been a single scratch on it as I had handed it in with screen protectors and a padded case!

Took my phone to cash converters because I really can't be bothered with posting things off/messing around. Miraculously my phone started working again in there!
  • I took my excellent condition HTC Wildfire to a branch of Cex and was told they would give £49 cash for it but more if I had a charger. I had the charger at home but didn't want to part with it. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough identification with me for them to buy it, (you need photo ID, and an invoice with name and address) so went home and later tried a different branch of Cex closer to home. They offered me £35 cash and maybe £40 with a charger! I challenged them that the price on the website said they gave £57 with no mention of charger. He said that was for a new phone in it's original packaging, with headphones, charger etc.!
Some days later went to original branch where they now said would only give me £49 if I had the charger. After some discussion about having been before and offered £49 without charger, they agreed to give me £49 cash - this once!
This is a franchise and it seems they can buy for whatever price they want, so perhaps good to shop around if you have more than one branch near you. The staff in the branch where I sold it were polite, efficient and friendly. Not so much in the branch where I turned it down, which I felt couldn't care less!
  • I have traded in two mobile phones with CEX in the past and it has always been an easy, pleasant transaction. Of course they gave me half of what they sold them for, but this is to be expected. However I tried to trade in phone number three the other day and experienced some problems. I visited the shop to find out the trade in price I would get for an iPhone 3GS, a lady asked me some questions, checked the phone and told me I would get £95. I didn't trade the phone in because I needed to save all my pictures and e-mails, but returned to the store a few days later with my phone ready to go to be told that I would get between £115 and £125 for the phone! Happy with this I said I would like to go forwards and trade it in, only for the member of staff to tell me that actually the phone wasn't in good enough condition and they couldn't take it at all ! Considering the phone is 4 years old, a couple of very minor scratches to the screen and a slight crack in the back of the phone is hardly damaged. My previous phones were in worse condition! Not only was this a wasted journey but now because I got my new contract over a week ago I can no longer trade my old phone in with Phones 4 U, which I would have done IF ONLY CEX had told me the first time I visited them that they would not accept my phone. Argh.

In conclusion they are indecisive when it comes to 1. the price they will give you and 2. whether they will actually accept the phone or not. So if you get a good deal snatch it up or they'll change their mind. Also they smell.

Why would anyone want to dispose of a "mint" phone anyway ?
CEX are not to be trusted ......
