My teenage son purchased a Grade C i-Phone 4 from CEX Milton Keynes for £310. A Grade A, through private or e-Bay at the time of writing only costs about £180. Two days after purchase I took the phone back to the store for a refund, only to find out that they don't do them but "would offer a credit note as a goodwill gesture". Seeing that everything else was similarly overpriced I decided to cut our losses and keep the phone.
Please don't use CEX for presents (there are no refunds like you would get in a normal shop) or purchase anything from there unless you have thoroughly researched the price first!
And I sincerely hope that you are reading this before, rather than after, making a purchase:)0 -
"Normal shops" don't all (or have to) offer "refunds".0

sorry as much as i dont rate cex thats your own fault for not checking prices first-theyre not cheap compared to ebay and could have saved yourself lots of money-can u imagine if everyone came back a few days later asking for a rfund because theyd seen it cheaper elsewhereWhat goes around-comes around0

I would not consider buying anything from Cex because of the poor service, poor warranties, and uncompetitive prices for secondhand goods which I can usually get cheaper new taking into account cashback, etc.
I have sold and still do sell mobile phones to Cex, because their prices are better than similar companies, even allowing for their tricks, some examples of which I give below.
I used to sell by post, but they never paid or even responded within a reasonable time. They had to be chased several times on each sale, when they gave a variety of excuses, big backlog of testing, the tester is off sick, the tester has gone home for the weekend, etc, etc. They would then undergrade the phone, and it's difficult to argue against this as it's not possible to get the item back. Eventually they would send a cheque out, but the cheque could written out incorrectly, say to the wrong name, so that it could not be cashed, etc, so I stopped using them.
On one occasion, I sent them a brand new charged but unused phone, in the original box complete with accessories, yet they tried to say it was grade B. They only regraded the phone to A when I told them the phone was brand new, which I got as part of a cashback contract deal where I wanted the 'free' contract and did not need the handset.
Recently they opened a shop locally, and I have been selling there, as it's easier to take back the item if they try their undergrading trick.
Their shop service is just as slow, so they have several staff selling, but only one buying, despite the longer queue of people with items to sell. They are slow on the testing, as however long they say the testing will take, on returning to the shop at that time and getting to the front of the queue, the testing will take another 50% of the estimated time. Grading of items at the shop is fairer than for items posted in, because the customer has the option to withdraw an item that is downgraded unfairly.
However the staff have other tricks, such as saying they do not have any cash in their till, and offering exchange instead. On one occasion it took ages before the manager could be arsed to bring to that till just enough money to cover that purchase.
Another time, the staff member looked at the test sheet, and said the item was worth £20, ie grade C. I argued against this, and eventually he said, sorry I misread a letter, the price is actually £24. I glanced at the test sheet, and the grade was written as a large capital B in a circle, yet he claimed he misread that as a C!0 -

Then go and do some research or sell it on Ebay.
There are lots of sites which purchase phones and most of thgem have plenty of feedback on here - including this one.0 -
DON'T EVER SELL YOUR STUFF TO CeX. I hate them. Sent them a perfect phone, offered £90. Waited for over 3 weeks with horrendous customer service and practically no contact. Finally hear from them today and they claim my phone is non-working and have offered me £17. Sad thing is all their reviews say if you decline this they either mysteriously lose the phone or it gets returned broken. These guys need to be put out of business.Thank you to everyone who posts competitions :T0

Found the contact details of Head of PR/Marketing (Jonathan Cronin) and it appears the bad manners and appalling customer service is condoned by senior staff, as he has failed to get back in touch. There is no chance of the staff attitudes getting better with bosses like this. CeX is better just avoided - plenty of other options!0

Took my Nexus 4 for trade in and was handed cash straight away... quite pleased with the trade.0

I won't ever use them again, bought 2 phones which were faulty and the local store (Hereford) have refused to refund, (post on this under consumer rights forum) using every possible excuse under the sun. Left me in tears, heavily pregnant with a crying baby and just shrugged at my quoting my rights at them. I prefer to deal with companies who train their staff in consumer rights AND customer service. HVe never dealt with such clueless bullies before.0
