• Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

I'll move this to the reclaim bank charges board :)
• Hello, I am with the bank of Ireland and have realised I have incurred some daft charges over the years. I have kept all my statements so was thinking about giving it a go. Anyone else have any experience of it here or know of anyone who did it?

MY attitude was and still is that if you had not have broken the T&C then you weould not have had to pay charges .. however that is of no help to you. There is a board on this site called 'Reclaim your bank charges' I would suggest that exactly the same rules apply on both sides of the Irish sea. There are people on that board that will offer you the advice you seek

• Ivan, the OFT obviously disagrees with you.The banks are not paying out from the kindness of their hearts!

Exactly my point .. and the banks are not the ones that are ultimately paying out .. it is ALL the customers that are paying out .. but instead of those that break the T&C paying for their own mistakes EVERYBODY will be paying for others that break the T&C ... irrespective of how good you are with your money YOU will ultimately pay for those with a much more cavalier attitude .... not exactly good long term money saving

I am not saying the banks are right or the banks are wrong (I do have my own opinions on that), all I am saying is that we are all losers because of this .. because if anybody thinks that the banks are not going to get any fees back that they happen to refund then they are living in cloud cukoo land.

• Need help; I live in Northern Ireland, where up to recently the charges have been iniquitous. am I able to follow the 'Reclaiming bank charges' or do they just follow for banking in England?

Great site
• Hiya,
I've just managed to claim back all my bank charges from Nationwide by following all the guidelines on the consumer action group website. The rules are the same for Nth Ireland apart from the fact that you can only claim up to £2000 before any interest & court fees in the small claims courts here. We can't use the moneyclaim site, but can still issue our claim on-line through https://www.courtsni.gov.uk - it's a pretty straightforward process, although I'm not sure how the banks in Nth Ireland are dealing with it. I found lots of advice on the CAG website -there are people giving advice on Nth Ireland banks there. Hope that helps -it can be a daunting process, but very rewarding when you finally get your money back!
• Can someone please tell me if the law is the same in Northern Ireland regarding bank charges? It mentions Scotland and England on the site?
Cheers
Tony
• The principle is the same its when it comes to court that there are differences between the system in England and Wales and Scotland and NI.

from Martin's article...

England and Wales, so for more details see Northern Ireland Courts and Scottish Sheriff Small Claims.

Just curious, I filed a claim online with the Northern Ireland courts almost 3 wks ago and just today I received a letter to comfirm it had been filed etc, Are the courts usually this bloody slow? In England it seems to take no time
