Flapjacks

Ok heres mine again - makes a big tray (just halve the amounts for an 8" cake tin):
8oz butter/marg
4oz sugar
8 tablespoons syrup (a tablespoon is pretty much 1 desertspoon I'd say)
16oz oats (if you substitute some oats, say 4 oz, with some cornflakes, it makes a slightly chewier flapjack)
Melt all except oats gently on hob, do not boil. Mix in oats. Press into tray with something cold (eg. cold hands)
Bake on 180/190 C for 15-20 mins checking the edges now and then (if they are crispy whilst in oven, they'll be even crispier once cooled!)
Pre-cut when you take them out and then leave to cool.
This makes chewy flapjacks, has never failed even when experimenting.
*****
The other day I tried scrimping on the syrup and used 6 tablespoons, and they were more like crunchy biscuits when cooled.
The other week I added 'Duo' choc/white choc spread to the melting mixture, which gave them a different flavour at the end. Nice!
I used to add nuts like almonds, til I ran out of nuts! Ive added raisens too, glace cheries, coconut, crunchy oaty type cereal, choc chips, dried strawberry, and they are also great covered in chocolate cake covering!!
PS can we have a dedicated Flapjack Thread?!!''A moment's thinking is an hour in words.'' -Thomas Hood0 -
I have lots of oats, and sugar, but no syrup.
Is it possible to make flapjacks with just sugar/butter/oats and no syrup? Don't really want to buy anything and want to put the oats to good use.
Any recipes anyone?
Thanks very much.
(PS am so glad I found this board! My Grandad gave me his old slow cooker when my step-grandma died and I have been a convert ever since! Especially as I work ridiculously long hours, it's great to come home to a cooked meal. All my friends take the mickey and say I'm too young for a slow cooker - I'm 24 - but I think it's the best thing ever!)0 -
I'm pretty sure you could make them with honey if you have that, it would just give a different flavour.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

Try this one.........
300g oats
225g soft light brown sugar
225g butter
100g raisins
a small knob of ginger, cut into tiny bits, if you like it..........
Just make it the usual way.
lana22 good to see you use a slow cooker, I do a piece of boiling bacon in mine on the weekend and take sandwiches to work - yum! :cool:I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

Fab, thanks, may go and try that. My boyfriend is working until 3am so would be nice for him to come home to some goodies! Haven't made flapjacks in ages - I used to make them all the time when I was a student - I lived with a girl who had coealiac disease so we made lots of gluten free treats!
Might also go and see what I can find in the cupboard/freezer to make more soup - I made roasted pepper and tomato, and leak and potato last week but we have just run out. I'm in the mood for cooking because my kitchen is nice and clean - not for long though! I just used the last of the roasted tomato soup as a pasta sauce - just added a bit of garlic and some more tomato puree to thicken it and it was delicious!0 -
I haven't tried this recipe yet but intend to!
No bake oat cookies
12 oz sugar
3 oz milk
2 oz butter
1 tablespoon cocoa
9 oz porridge
2 tsps vanilla
Melt all ingredients and boil for 2 mins - add the oats. Drop a heaped teaspoon of the mixture onto a tray and flatten into a cookie shape - leave for an hour to harden.Kondo'ed 76 items from wardrobe, 4 carrier bags of books0 -

Ah that sounds fab too. Will let you know which ones I make. May have to make both versions now!0 -
Just a quick question, I made flapjacks at the weekend, left them to cool and they were delicious:D I then dipped them in chocolate and again left them to cool while I went out, by the time I came back they were like rocks:o , would that be because they hadn't been put into an airtight container?? Sorry about the ignorance, don't usually home bake, Thanks!Carpe Diem
