The government didn't design or produce the crap did they.

Maybe people should check up on the history of 'Rover' ..........
What about the government who nationalised the british car industry ...... merged Jaguar,Triumph,Rover,Morris,Austin into British Leyland (remember them?)

Complete lack of investment (the whole design budget of a family saloon was probably what Toyota spent on the design of an interior)

Then its period under British aerospace, went into partnership(ish) with Honda, sold out to BMW (who nicked Landrovers off road expertise) all in all not a good recipe for consistant quality motors.

BMW were not going to allow rover to build cars to compete with its on range .........

If Rover et'al were left alone in the 60's /70's no doubt that Rover would own BMW,and be giving Mercedes a seriuos run for its money.

No, they would have carried on making poorly designed junk that leaked oil etc. everywhere and broke down on a regular basis, they would have folded sooner.

By left alone in the 60's /70's i meant before they were nationalised.

They would not have had the design and engineering depts starved of cash by the managment, which in the case of BL onwards meant a government department.

Its a sad case that is all to common in this country,we have the engineering and design talent to invent and build, but no body seems to want to invest in that talent, and it all goes to foreign companies.
