your always supposed to stay as far left as possible, while staying in the correct lane for your destination.

so if the motorway is empty you should be in lane 1 always.

if the motorway traffic is very light all and there is sufficiant space for all cars to be in lane 1 and be the 2 cheverons apart if you are all doing 70 both lanes 2 and 3 should be empty.

as for lorries they are not alowed in lane 3.
  • No your correct. passing on the left is fine, undertaking isn't. It becomes undertaking when changing of lanes is involved for whoever is over/undertaking.

Sorry, but this is wrong as it is being described. You may only pass vehicles on your right when all lanes are congested, and you are only keeping up with traffic in your lane. All overtaking must be must be done in the lanes to the right of the slower vehicle, i.e., lanes 2,3,4 etc.
  • I really cannot abide car drivers sat behind me flashing their lights, when i am driving the lorry trying to overtake lorries in the lane on my left ........ don't they realise its Europes fault ? 60mph limit for trucks on the motorway, but Europe insist we are limited to 56 .......

We have deliveries to do dontcha know .......

If it's Europe's fault then how come some trucks registered in other EU states appear to be able to go as fast as they like? David

Legally you have to overtake on the right, however crossing from Lane 1 to lane 3 in 1 maneuver can be classed as driving with undue care and attention as well so beware of that.
Why is that without due care and attention? I always do it, particularly when overtaking middle lane hogs, just keep my left signal on and do all the usual mirror and blind spot checks twice.

Because you can either overtake someone "on the inside" or "on the outside" therefore lane 2 & 3 can be an outside lane relative to 1. lane 1 & 2 can be inside lanes relative to 3.

That's what I do. Unfortunately most middle lane hogs will decide that they're hogging the centre lane and decide to pull back in when you're going round them on the inside lane, without checking their blind spot and when you are in their blind spot!

If the road is in the slightest bit congested, I'll perform the move in two hits as opposed to one single one.

Only if you do so without any regard to what's in the mirrors and almost sideswipe a passing car, like the tw*t driving the local "taliban taxi" almost did to me today

There is no law against changing lanes as many times as you want providing you do so safely and with all "due care and attention".

Why do some people refer to lane 3 (of a 3 lane motorway) as the outside lane?

It's because we drive on the left, which is the inside.

It all goes back to horse riding and racing. Most race tracks are left handed, i.e. all competitors run round a rough circle with the inside rail to their left and outside rail to their right. Enter cars, and the terminology continued, and eventually got off the racetrack and onto the road. Left is inside, right is outside.
