Lane naming for Motorways

Ok we all know that the correct names for Motorway lanes are 1, 2, 3 etc. (from left to right).
Why do some people refer to lane 3 (of a 3 lane motorway) as the outside lane? It doesn't make sense, as it has other lanes to the left of it and other opposing lanes and a central barrier to the other side of it.

Never thought of it like that, lol. I detest when people call lane three the "fast" lane though, as no lane is the fast lane. Lane one is for normal driving, and lanes two and three are for overtaking. I see your point, but I think "outside lane" refers to them being overtaking lanes....maybe.0

Near side, central and off side lanes, surely?0

Something to do with lane 1 being inside the hard shoulder whilst lane 3 is outside the hard shoulder?0

I thought they were the "Lorry lane," the "cars that dont want to overtake can go at any speed they want lane" and the "audi/bmw/mercedes only lane?"0

Why do they need two over taking lanes?
That is like over taking someone over taking.0 -
Because some idiots can't move from out of the middle lane after they've overtaken something in the first lane so we have to go in to the 3rd lane.0

Nearside lane, Lorry lane which is also shared by this is my 1st time on the motorway user, or i have never driven over 40mph
and just because its a motorway i am not going to break that rule now lane.
Middle lane. mainly uninsured, unlicenced drivers who think they wont get picked up in that lane. Even at 2am on an almost
empty M6 (southbound J7 for instance).
Offside lane, You get the i paid a lot for this car so get out of my way you peasant. But also the underpowered MOT less wrecks
with the throttle pushed through the floor trying to tailgate anything they can. Usually another body kit/spoiler laden underpowered
box thats never had a service because the owner bought some LEDs instead of oil.
Me? Well im in the shed in the outside lane slowing you oik's down, lol. Until you try and pass me then you have to wonder
what is under my bonnet when i dissapear into the distance.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
