There is only 1 sensible answer to the original question, and that is to name them lane 1, lane 2, lane....... etc from the left. Considering that certain sections of MW have 6 lanes it's the only way, and the method the police use to avoid confusion, (although I'm not sure that last sentence can be said under any circumstances, :p)

Whatever you do, don't let Inactive catch you calling the 3rd or whatever lane the "fast lane", eh fella??;)

It did once hold some credibility as originally all MW's were 3 lane and there was no speed limit back then, often lane 1 is now the "fast lane" alas.;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

i hate the bikes that like to use lane 2.5 they come flying down the middle of the cars so you cant actually get back to the middle lane to get out there way becuase they are driving so close to your left rear quarter.

i had some numpty come flying down the middle of 2 & 3 and he smashed his hand on my wing mirror i bet that hurt so bad was amusing even tho he carried on and didnt stop cost me a mirror glass tho

also any motor bike riders here why do you drive on the corner of a car so the drivers cant see you why not stay directly behind... this isnt a dig i just want to know if thats where you are meant to ride it just seems odd to sit in the blind spot of a vechicle. quite often on the motor way i will see one come up behind me and then simply vanish so you cant change lane incase you sqush them

"Filtering" as it is called is a great aid to making progress for motorcycles, but it should only be done when other traffic is stationary or moving very slowly. Personally if traffic on the motorway is moving less than 30mph then I will filter between lanes 2 and 3. Any faster - say 30 to 50mph - and I'll sit in lane, or take advantage of lanes left or right that might be empty, but I won't ride between cars. Bikers who do it in fast moving traffic (50mph+) are just stupid and deserve what they get.

It is worth noting that filtering is not illegal in the UK, and is in fact encouraged by the likes of the IAM and RoSPA. My IAM examiner (a serving police instructor) complemented me on the standard of my motorway riding and filtering skill.

Bikes should only be close to your offside rear in two circumstances. One is when they are passing during filtering (see above) and should therefore only be there for a fleeting moment. The other is moving into position for an overtake - but again this should only be for a very short time to a) get a good view of the road ahead and b) to indicate to you and other road users that they are going to go for the overtake. As with filtering, this is something encouraged by the IAM and RoSPA. Anyone sat on your tail for an extended period of time is a numpty - pure and simple.

Whilst I agree in principle, (as an ex biker), the problem is as you say that some riders, and it's a good proportion, do not understand what filtering means.
It's not defined clearly anywhere and there are bikers who deem it aceptable if all lanes are moving at 60 or 70mph to still "filter"

30mph should be the max on open roads and much less in town traffic, but defining that would be difficult.

You're not allowed to overtake on the left. That's it. If there's 1 car in the middle lane, you should be overtaking it on the right (lane 3, overtaking-est lane, or whatever). If you do encounter one of these middle lane hogs, try doing the overtake whilst holding down your horn, then at least they might notice you.
The only exception to this rule is when there is a queue of traffic to your right. 1 car is not a queue of traffic. Also, of course, one way streets.
  • if they are in the middle lane and im approaching them then that is traffic provided they arent doing over 70

The M1 was hammered in MLH's at the weekend. I usually just pull out of Lane 1, across Lane 2 into Lane 3, overtake then move all the way back to Lane 1 hoping they get the message.

Generally they don't. But I don't let the idiots get to me, I just drive at 70 and use the lanes correctly.

If it's Europe's fault then how come some trucks registered in other EU states appear to be able to go as fast as they like? David
Because if they ever get pulled they just gabble on in a foreign language and the poliss let them go.:D
